The Nemedian Sage and Aesir Mercenary listened as the high priest droned on. Thier disguises held out though they did not understand what was going on.
All the acolytes were called up onto the dais one by one to recite some words before the statue of Zog the Frog god. The two intruders managed to memorize the phrase and again managed to blag their way through a sticky situation.
Out in the market, the Pictish Shaman invested in a bunbdle of elephant tusks while the Iranistani Assassin watched on. They eventually found a nice Inn to spend the night ("The Headless Chicken", I believe).
Back inside, the two searched futilely for the Teeth of Gwelhur. Running out of places to look, the Sage decided to try and see if he could locate it using arcane methods. This was extremely sucessful. He had a vision which directed him 10 miles to the East, to the partially abandoned city of Alkhmeenon.
The next day they set off after nearly getting arrested for trying to bribe an army colonel, to let them go with him to the city which was "off limits to foreigners".
They made theor own way - via the tangent road. (Incidentally, dear reader, there were a total of 24 or was it 25 tangents during the game as the players and GM raised off topic subjects at regular intervals). Back to the story...
Arriving at the cliffs that surrounded the city, the Assassin began to pick the four locks which secured an iron grille door over a dank and dreary tunnel.
The Mercenary spotted a series of ropes up the cliff - tied to iron hoops embedded in the rock. It was deemed to be a safer route.
They were almost at the top when a soldierly type chap peeped over the edge of the cliff and with a deft knife-stroke severed the top -most rope...

NAKAR and MARCO managed to hang onto the rope as their weight pulls out one of the iron hoops.
FARADAH spots a ledge, climbs over to investigate. It is large and has a cave leading into the cliff face. A slow incline ledge disappears out of sight round the curve of the cliff. KASCH follows.
They all manage to climb across and are soon deep in the cave.
The cave opens into a high fissure which reaches to the surface.
FARADAH climbs up and sees two warriors crouched near to where the rope was fastened to the cliff-top. She climbs back down to report.
NAKOR climbs up next, followed by the others. They have a brief discussion of whether to sneak past or kill the soldiers.
The soldiers are stabbed and pushed off the cliff. (I forget which pair of them did the dirty deed).
From the top of the cliff they see into the white stone city - overgrown with trees and grass. They set off down a trail which winds towards the city.
Entering the back streets, they see that most of the buildings are well maintained. They pass overgrown pavements, plazas with dried up marble fountains.
The dome of the royal palace is easily located.
Arriving at the perimeter walls, they see a group of Zembabwean warriors led my two white men - the large man who cut the rope earlier and a thinly built man. The party watches from concealment.
Eventually, the thin man leaves the group and heads into the city. FARADAH follows. They end up at the city gate, which is garrisoned by soldiers of the Keshan Royal Guard.
More soldiers arrive at the gate. They have a number of Zembabwean prisoners.
The skinny man curses and turns away. He spots FARADAH.
A quick conversation ensues in which he introduces himself as TUTAMEK - a Stygian thief, hired by a different employer to retrieve “the Teeth”. He knows about FARADAH and the other heroes.
They return to their respective camps…

Soon after returning, TUTAMEC splits up his force into two groups and heads off alone around the palace.
Soon, clouds of smoke begin to spread throughout the city.
The heroes spot TUTAMEK climbing up the side of the palace and FARADAH decides to go after him.
PTEOR, the other groups second in command, attacks out of the smoke into the Royal guards who try to extinguish the closest fires.
KASCH requests assistance from his god JHEBBEL SAG. A hoard of rats rise up from the cellars of nearby buildings and chase off many of the combatants. PTEOR rushes into the building.
FARADAY sneaks in and soon finds the throne room, just as PTEOR does. She hides. PTEOR sneaks through a secret door behind the throne dais. When FARADAH enters he grabs her and after a struggle, disarms her. They go through the other door in the room and enter the chapel.
More Royal guard arrive in the courtyard and enter the building. The guys outside wait to see what happens.
In the chapel,  apart from the pews and altar, balcony and stained glass, is a statue of a huge gorilla. Sitting in its lap and prising out its teeth is TUTAMEK.
The soldiers burst into the chapel as the thieves make good their escape. The guys outside see the thieves leave the palace and rendezvous with them in the north of the city.
A joining of parties takes place, FARADAH is rearmed and the new party sets off towards the cliff.
However, the teeth emit a pulse of ethereal enery which wakens the gorilla GWELHUR nad the 25-foot gorilla gives chase.
It chases them to the top of the cliff where KASCH realises he has some empathy with the beast 0 enough to subdue it while they all climb down the ropes.
At the bottom, another dilemma awaits them; GWELHUR will not let anyone other than KASCH carry the teeth – which are necessary for the next stage of the mission - but now KASCH has expressed wishes to remain in the jungle with his new found friend...

They walked back to the city and halted on the outskirts to discuss what to do next.
Suggestions ranged from killing the ape by some means - drowning was one suggestion. Other options proposed included a hide-and-seek scenario where the ape counted to a million, running off when it was asleep, trying to lose it by traversing the tunnel at the cliff. They finally decided that KASCH and the beast would travel overland and be collected at a pre-arranged location. They would use the teeth and then return them to the beast that would hopefully then go home and not kill them for the inconvenience.
The party also discussed how to get rid of TUTUMAN (yes, they changed his name - well Hannah did) and PTEOR. An elaborate ruse was concocted whereby they were told that the ship would leave in the morning when in fact it would leave within the hour! The plan seemed to work and the ship sailed for the coast with FARADAH, MARCO and NAKOR on board.
KASCJ and GWELHUR toddled along the river towards the coast, scaring villagers along the way. They camped at night. KASCH was rudely awakened by the death-screams of the ape - it collapsed by his side - an arrow protruding from its eye-socket! More arrows flew at the druid. KASCH prayed for assistance from his god and the shooting stopped. The druid ran like the wind towards the coast, the bag of teeth bumping against his thigh. When at last he reached the shore he lit a smoky signal fire and waited.
The ship reached the rendezvous point. NAKOR and MARCO took a hunting party into the forest the gather fresh meat. Time passed and a new plan was formed. The men would continue to travel south to the Zarkeba River, while FARADAH took the ship back up the coast to find KASCH.
Later that morning, a group of villagers, led by two soldiers and accompanied by PTEOR (bearing a huge bow), passed by the concealed KASCH. A few minutes later, he spied the ship, signalled them and as the longboat neared shore, sped out to meet it. PTEOR opened fire with arrows and managed to kill one rower, but they managed to get out of bow range. PTEOR disappeared into the trees again.
The ship began to sail south again, but as they neared a bay, the slaver ship appeared and gave chase. It soon became apparent that they would be caught, so KASCH leapt over the side and swam for shore. The slaver caught up and smashed the smaller ship almost in two with its spiked ram. A short fight ensued and FARADAH took the most favourable option open to her and followed the shaman over the side. A few others followed her. The ship was captured.
The escapees met up and began the trek south to join NAKOR and MARCO…

FARADAH swims ashore and joins KASCH on the beach.
They begin the journey south to where MARKO and NAKOR were previously dropped off. MARKO sends a subliminal message to FARADAH to let her know where they are. This results in a splitting headache for both of them.
After a days travel they finally meet up at NAKOR’s camp where they feast on barbecued parrot.
The next day they reach the entrance to the poison river and consider making a raft or walking along the river bank. The bank wins.
They are attacked by a huge snake, which NAKOR slays with one mighty blow while KASCH tries desperately to meld himself with the earth. They are all covered in the spraying lifeblood of the slain snake. The smell of the river masks the smell of unwashed bodies.
They decide to travel through the jungle at night for a while, but soon see sense and make a camp. The moon reflects on the scummy river, giving it to silver sheen.
Next morning the sunlight glints off the spires of towers in the distance. They pick up the pace.
Rounding a bend, they see the dilapidated city before them - on the other bank of the river. They also see a black winged ape perched atop a spire that rises above a particularly foreboding black pyramid.!
MARKO decide to create a magical raft, so he and FARADAH search for suitable logs. Meanwhile NAKOR and KASCH look for a woodland creature to test out the acidity / poisonness of the river.
The wood-gatherers return with lots of logs and the hunters return with a squirrel (wearing a tutu and boob-tube apparently. Don’t ask me). NAKOR hurls the poor creature into the river and it drowns. Hmm. That was pretty obviously going to happen, poison or not.
The logs are lied up and branches and fronds lace together to form a sturdy raft. NAKOR deems it useful only as a wind break, so they decide to spend the night and try the raft in the morning. The night passes uneventfully.
In the morning, the winged ape has gone. The raft proves very effective and the four “heroes” clamber onto the crumbling docks of the ancient city…

The heroes enter the ancient city and head for the most prominent building – a huge black pyramid. Upon the flat top of the building is a high stone spire (where the creature perched) and a large stone altar.
In the middle of an open paved area at the base of the pyramid is a headless statue of a muscular winged humanoid. The party examined the statue and came to the conclusion that it was only a statue. So they climbed to the top of the pyramid.
They mused that the stone was either a sacrificial altar or a place where the inhabitants washes out their bloody rags due to the dark stains on the stone. None of their immediate experiments to ‘activate’ either the teeth or the altar appeared to work. Then FARADAH spotted the slaver ship pulling up in the harbour, its decks swarm with black warriors. The heroes rush down the pyramid and hide in a building on the edge of the paved square.
Soon, two dozen of the warriors, led by their white female captain appear in the square and set up a defensive circle around the statue. The captain calls out to attract the attention of the hidden heroes.
FARADAH responds and soon an agreement of sorts is reached regarding the acquisition and dividing up of the treasure. The woman captain introduced herself as BELIT, Queen of the Black Coast.
While KASCH remains hidden with the bag of teeth, the rest of them climb the pyramid and examine the altar. Around this time it appears that KASCH has in fact “done a runner”, so NAKOR and a group of black warriors are despatched to apprehend KASCH and the teeth.
Meanwhile, on the altar building, the new partnership determines that the altar does in fact pivot, so warriors are set to moving it. However, the altar is booby-trapped and four warriors lie dead in the blink of an eye - sliced and diced by blades and spikes. FARADAH was also clipped by a blade, her shapely thigh spattered with blood.
A second attempt was made; this time, forewarned, they managed to gently slide the altar, jam it open and disable the traps.
In the jungle, KACH was making good his escape - fearing that he was being betrayed in some cut-throat ‘deal’. He headed east along the river, which soon lost its poisonous sheen. Hearing the pursuers, he hid the bag of teeth (using a little illusion) and melded himself painfully into the ground, leaving a tell-tale smear of blood upon the ground.
NAKOR and the warriors arrived. NAKOR stabbed the earth where the bloody patch lay, to no avail. He decided to send one of the warriors back to fetch MARKO the mage. Then he set up camp.
MARKO agreed to go back with the scout and set off immediately.
Night began to fall, BELIT offered FARADAH a place to sleep on his ship. But the Iranistani Assassin elected to sleep in a nearby house instead. The parties went their separate ways.
KASCH sensed the opportunity for flight and emerged from the ground. He ran off into the jungle again but was spotted and the black warriors gave chase. With the last of his energy, a desperate KASCH cast a fear spell upon the area. The warriors fled in panic as the forest came alive with giant snakes.
About that time, the strange haunting laughter started again, and soon the frightened yells became screams of pain and death.
KASCH, NAKOR and MARKO mustered at the campfire for mutual safety. A truce of sorts was agreed.
In her house, a tired and wounded FARADAH was suddenly assailed by the winged ape. With a remarkable and very fortunate display of agility and fleet-footedness, she evaded the beast and fled to the relative safety of the ship.
Oh yes, MARKO had a dream about the decline of the city, the rise of the winged ape and the creation of its giant hyena servants.
Oh my, are they in trouble now…

BELIT offers FARADAH private female companionship, but the Assassin declines the offer.
The lads in the forest fight off the hyenas. When morning comes they return to the ship.
They all return to the altar atop the temple. To find it back in its original place. Again they carefully move it aside – with no ill effects.
A tall, narrow stairway is revealed. They descend.
At the bottom is a stone wall which they deduce is a doorway with a secret key. Searching around, KASCH locates the activation point and opens the doorway. A six foot passageway is revealed which opens into the wide chamber. Upon the far wall is a statue of a bullock, minus horns!
KASCH places the teeth into the empty horn sockets while FARADAH, BELIT, NAKOR and MARKO look on.
The far wall begins to rise and the six foot passageway begins to close. KASCH removes the teeth; the wall stops, but the door keeps moving.
FARADAH rushes to get out of the chamber. There is a muffled scream as the stone door slams shut on her leg. She passes out.
KASCH replaces the teeth and the wall opens fully.
Revealing a vast chamber crammed with wealth beyond their wildest dreams! Well, the assemblage of ten thousand years anyway. There are piles of precious metals, jewellery, gems, and items of art, weapons and armour of all kinds.
Exhibiting his usual gay abandon, KASCH dashes into the room, setting off the traps.
The rooms are suddenly full of flying shards of steel. No-one goes unscathed, but fortunately there were no fatalities.
They set to searching through the treasure hoard for the choicest bits.
NAKOR sorts out a matching set of ivory decorated weapons and armour. The re-curve ivory bow being of particular interest; it appears to project an arrow incredibly quickly. A trial shot propelled a shaft clean through the statue of the bull before shattering on the far wall.
They searched for daggers too - KASCH gathered a bag full of them.
BELIT secreted a few items upon her person while the others were not looking (bwahahahaaaa).
MARKO attempted to communicate with the warriors on the other side of the stone door. Unfortunately his fatigued body and mind could take no more, and he swooned - again.
On the other side of the door, the warriors sever FARADAH’S trapped lower leg and quickly tend to the wound.
Those inside the chamber realise that the air quality was deteriorating fast, so extinguished their torches. This meant they were able to perceive the faint glow of a strange globe.
NAKOR snatched it up and - working on some innate reasoning - placed it on the mages chest. Amazingly, MARKO is revived to full health and power. He is about to use his magic to open the door when the warriors outside activate the door and fresh air flows in… past the Assassins flattened lower leg, yuk.
BELIT orders her warriors to fetch stones from outside to prevent the door closing again, and they begin to carry the treasure out of the chamber and into the square below for assessment.
Not long after than, the winged ape attacked; swooping down on MARKO, but missing. As he circled for another pass, NAKOR appeared with his new bow and succeeded in sending an arrow through the body of the beast. Badly wounded, it dove into the safety of the trees.
Shortly thereafter, the hyena’s attacked.
Most of the warriors grabbed what they could and headed back to the ship. The heroes and a few bow armed warriors fought a rear-guard action.
In the final climactic battle, combinations of sorcery and divine intervention resulted in the demise of the ape and most of its hyena chums - who turned against him.
MARKO had most of his scalp removed by a vicious swipe of the beast’s claws.
The surviving hyenas changed form back to their original human shape and slowly crumbled to dust.
FARADAH regained consciousness enough to administer herself a few doses of her own special medicines.
They loaded what treasure they could aboard the ship and made ready to sail…

The ship drifted with the tide along the poison river down to the open sea.
Where they encountered STRABONO, TUTAMEK and PTEOR.
BELIT handed over the dagger to TUTAMEK and the heroes were briefed about the real plans of the evil LORD VARENZO. He had executed the royal family in Kordava and imposed a curfew after declaring himself EMPEROR VARENZ I.  The jade warriors had created a cordon around the city which was under siege by a host from neighbouring nations - led by KING CONAN of Aquilonia and LADY MARIA - VARENZO’S adversary.
BELIT said her farewells and the group sailed north. They docked in Messantia and travelled north through the Ghoul Forest to rendezvous with CONAN.
Upon arrival, they quickly offered their services to sneak CONAN into the city where he would fight VARENZO, using the Dagger of Varenghi - the only weapon remaining to them which could penetrate the magical armour worn by VARENZO.
So they snuck into the city, managed to reach VARENZO’S house in the city where they were trapped by VARENZO and his men.
Perhaps “trapped” is the wrong word, because CONAN, assisted by the other heroes in physical and magical manner made a valiant attack, culminating in the demise of VARENZO.
While CONAN went to signal his army, the party headed off to loot VARENZO’S mansion in the north. MARKO had earlier ascertained that it held a goodly number of magical items.
The jade warriors returned to protect their mistress.
CONAN and MARIA entered the city, and MARIA is declared regent...

The tale is almost told.
The heroes were rewarded in money and property - and some in position.

MARKO inherited the mansion he had so eagerly ransacked. He promised to visit the others at times as he travelled the world furthering his magical knowledge. He also employed VARENZO’S butler JEEVES to look after his new home in his absence.

NAKOR made a very good impression on CONAN and was offered a position as a Captain in the Black Legion in Aquilonia. He accepted.

FARADAH was asked to attend the royal court in Aquilonia to assist in the tutoring of PRINCE CONN in her special skills. She accepted. She was also fitted with a prosthetic leg - the best money could buy and of cutting-edge technologically advanced design.

KASCH returned to Messantia, where he purchased a large ship, refitted it and opened up a lucrative floating 24/7 bar in the harbour, ably assisted by his old drinking partner and doorman/hatchman BIG GOLIATH.

TUTAMEK retired to VARENZO’S old town house and soon after married LADY MARIA. PTEOR went home to Zamora where he lived happily ever after surrounded by his harem. BELIT returned to the lost city and stripped it clean of everything of the slightest value, then returned to Brythunia where she too lived happily ever after surrounded by his/her harem.

Final comments from the GM: What a very strange experience…

Strange maybe......surreal? Oh yes! However, it has to be said, a great way to spend Tuesday nights. A huge thank you to Ian for running this & thank you to him & my fellow players, for making it enjoyable.
Martin (Kasch).
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
