Scaren This small but vicious hunter/scavenger has a bristle covered body, supported by a 30cm wingspan. They can be dangerous if encountered in large numbers as they sometimes flock together to bring down much larger creatures (inc humans!) Scaren legs sport a downwards curving spurs that, when the creature’s legs are drawn up in flight, hang down like curving knife blades. Normally they eat Jurgis, Lacerta and other Avis, but a ‘flight’ of Scaren will sometimes perform a series of fast sweeps past larger prey, slicing out ribbons of the victim’s flesh.
Scaren also have an unusual defence, they have special internal air sacks, which are inflated to put its body under great internal pressure. If the creature’s skin is then pierced, it will explode in a meter wide shower of pungent gore and a distinctive ‘pop’. This sound and smell is a sign for other predators to come running and along with the lack of Scaren meat remaining after a pop proves an effective deterrent for most creatures.
DaggerbillThe Daggerbill wades through the swamp, lake, and river shores of Uma, hunting for both fish and tiny lacerta. Vicious creatures, they are well known to attack even creatures of much larger size than themselves. They are sometimes kept in captivity and their sword-fencing like fighting style put to use in organised ‘duels’ for entertainment, or as guard beasts.
