Heart of Darkness (WIP Ongoing)
« on: February 28, 2013, 10:59:32 AM »
This is likely to be a work in progress now, but always like c&c folks

Raige ran his hands up her rib, caressing her gently before opening the fastenings at his fingertips. Once they were freed he pulled open the panel that would expose the inner workings of the Stiletto. He looked into the opening, carefully testing connections. Probing her circuits and documenting her connections, all in an effort to locate the dark heart of the Stiletto…

The circuits reminded him of Caro, an electronic/telepathic interface, but unlike Caro there seemed to be no central brain, no CPU to oversee the systems. But that was just one more facet of the ship that was unusual. Every other ship Raige had seen, every other main system used a central interface but not the Stiletto. So far as he could tell there was no central system, almost as if the crew themselves were to serve this function when connected to the ship.

But that could not be, there had to be something more. No one could deny the ship had something else at its core, something Raige struggled to define, but something that Garvey might call it’s soul and much as it galled Raige, that was the best pronoun he had found for it so far.

But there had to be some way to alter it, to change its malevolent spirit, if only he could find it source, if only he could somehow understand it in more depth…he closed the panel back up and shuffled along to the next one.

Time was what he needed, more time and peace and quiet to study the ship, to learn its capabilities. Just what had the Federation built into this marvel apart from its malevolence? They had harnessed the power of a sun for its energy source; they had built an engine that would hurl them across the space-time continuum faster than anything else the Federation had so far built and had created a neural network that allowed the crew to consciously operate the ship at those velocities…but what was the price they had paid? What sacrifices had been made, and could they be overcome…could this ship, born in blood and pain be put to a good use?

He moved along to the next panel, again his hands running over her ribs tenderly, unconsciously. In the routine of the work his mind considered the ship further. Coldly, logically it was a massively powerful ship. Hugely valuable but in terms of cash value, military value and political value but that also made it extremely risky to own…unless they could gain some leverage they may be forever hunted, as Blake was in the Liberator a generation before..

But his instinct told him otherwise, that his fate was bound into this ship for good or ill, that history had given them another chance to bring the Federation crashing down…that here was a chance to succeed where Blake and Avon had failed…

Ideas and thoughts stirred in his mind, incomplete and hard to pin down but that whispered to him of how the ship was made, of the caged sun that powered it and the psychic circuits that controlled it. They suggested to him that somehow they were all connected to the dark, disturbing feeling the ship gave to people at times, and how it was connected to the “brown outs” on the Xaranor facility and in turn, to the strange alien ship that had appeared there.

Deep in his mind there was a memory of The Darkness, of something seen or read…of how it had affected Caro, how it affected anyone that had a psychic connection. There was something he knew about the Darkness, if only he could remember…

Raige put his tools down and sat back on his haunches.

Was it all to do with the Tarial Cells, the ship was full of them, interfaced with all aspects of the ships operations, they were how Caro accessed computers remotely and he was sure they used the same dimension for communication as telepathy, which is how the ship functioned at full capacity...

Hopefully Caro would be fit and hale in a day or so, he would be able to give more accurate diagnostics, more importantly, he was built for defence and perhaps if it was the Tarial Cells then Caro could be their defence, perhaps this was the key to using the ship to its fullest...

Raige shook his head, almost disgusted at his own optimism as he picked up his tools again. He would tame this ship, or he would break it...or die trying.

He sat in the command chair, his mind in turmoil at the recent events and the encounter with The Darkness. His body and mind ached with that dull throb of a pain present for so long there is no memory of a time without it. He felt drained, he had been made to feel powerless against that dread alien entity, his will to fight had been total, but he had been all but rendered impotent.  Ultimately though they had collectively succeeded…

But succeeded at what? The ship was intact just about, everyone was battered and bruised and both he and Claudia had come close to death. Caro had been smashed about and had to be rendered back into coma again to aid his healing. They were still being pursued by the dark alien ship, were still tagged by its dark matter weapon that burdened them with excess mass and was leaving a trail to follow across light years and they had been forced to flee in an almost arbitrary direction rather than the course already agreed on…

On the other hand they had stopped The Darkness from manifesting, and on first inspection it didn’t seem like it was making another attack, perhaps it needed Caro to do that though and if that was the case they would need to take steps to ensure they could stop it quickly and effectively. Additionally the desperation of the moment had meant an opportunity…excuse…for Raige to interface himself with the Stiletto directly.

There was still the strange eerie feeling as he pulled the helmet on but perhaps not the nausea he expected. He wasn’t even sure if the eerie feeling was a memory of his previous times in the seat or an echo of his nightmares inflicted upon him when trying to rescue Claudia. There still remained the feeling of being in a dark room, with someone or something else in the room, there was none of the sheer…evil that he experienced under psychic assault when The Darkness had him.

Whatever the so called Darkness was, it was something different to the Stiletto, he had seen both close up. The two were not the same.

He needed to investigate this more; to find out what was in the dark with him, what was it that hid there, why the alien ship was pursuing them why had the Federation failed to master this ship? Was it the Darkness? Was it sabotage?

His mind turned back to the Stiletto, to his interface with it. He couldn’t explain to the others what this was like. The feeling of oneness with the ship, the feeling of power that came from the chained star at the ships centre…of the expanded perceptions that allowed him to see across time and space…of the sheer ferocity of knowing that with a thought he could literally rain fire on his enemies…if he could prove to them it was safe, but he had to prove that to himself first.

Briefly he allowed his perceptions to rush out into space, probing round him for a parsec or more to see what was out there as they cut though the space time continuum at unheard of speeds. Behind them they trailed a wake of dark matter, leaving the perfect trail for their pursuers but as yet they had no way to stop it, at least they were still easily outrunning the alien ship.

He pulled back to his here and now and thought it could be easy to get lost. Now he looked internally into the ship…reviewing its every nook and cranny, its forms and functions, its operations. All the while that feeling of something else being here, out of sight.

For a long time he sat there, in the gloom, thinking.

He was too tired, too injured and too raw from the last encounter. His next experiment might need him to be at best strength and most focused. With a sigh he reached up and slowly lifted the helmet away from himself, disconnecting from the ship.

His attention was back in the flight deck of the Stiletto, but he felt numb, disconnected. Jiny patted him on the shoulder and ginned and Raige managed a half smile. For a moment she seemed to him to be false, a two dimensional rendering of the real Jiny…on a cardboard cut-out flight deck. Then like something coming into focus the normal sound, colour and scents of the ship returned.

Raige pulled himself out of the chair and staggered off to his quarters.

He was stood in front of the mirror, wiping his face clean of shaving oil. He felt refreshed, rested and focused. Pulling his flight suit up over his shoulders he thought about recent events. Things were clearer now, he felt better and stronger. He felt more prepared and his old doubts and fears had been washed away.

Raige knew he had dwelt far too much on the past and had given entirely too much of his energy to things that were done and could not be changed, the only thing that mattered was the present and the future, both of which hinged on the Stiletto.

Yesterday he had plugged into the ship in an emergency, but it had gone well. He had learnt many things about the ship and its capabilities and the control that could be extended over the ship. The only thing that needed resolving was whatever occupied that same space when you interfaced…he was adamant it wasn’t the other thing, the Nemesis. He had encountered them both close at hand and the two were very, very different. In fact Raige wondered if his earlier memories about the ship were more to do with the Darkness than anything else. That’s what it felt like when he was being attacked by it, but he hoped that particular danger was passed.

What mattered now then was whether or not the Stiletto could be controlled or if it couldn’t and if it couldn’t then it was of no use to him other than as a means to procure another ship...to control it he had to interface and find what it was in the darkness. It might be nothing more than the residual subconscious of the computing system, it might be Raige’s own psyche he was sensing in some obscure way or it might be the proper ships interface that was kept hidden for some reason.

He smiled and thought ”Best case scenarios Raige”. The worst case was of course that he was wrong, that the ship and the Darkness were the same thing, or that the ship was just as evil. But if that were the case then they ditch the Stiletto, find something else and start again, assuming Jiny hadn’t put a plasma bolt into his head, but then he wouldn’t care.
