Personnel File <<Classified Beta Five>>

Subject: Meson, Raige
Gender: Male
Origin: Foreigner1
Planet of Birth: Chenga2
Age: 28 Standard Terran years
Rank: Citizen - Beta Grade

STATS

Physical Description:
Meson is slightly below average height and weight due to his youth spent outside the Federation on low gravity stations and orbitals.
Light brown hair cut short, clean shaven and with blue eyes.

Career History:
Term 1:
Employed as a Free Trader outside the Federation. Working for a passenger liner as ships crew through basic training at the end of which time he attains the rank of Able Space Hand. There are no other significant events3 during this period.

Term 2:
Joined the Federation Navy as part of their recruitment drive in the wake of the war and after aptitude tests showing exemplary reflexes and high intellect he was given starship gunnery training. At this time his squadron took part in the Sidra system action4 where he distinguished himself with accurate and telling fire. Decorated and Commissioned to Space Ensign.

Term 3:
He is automatically retained in the navy and seconded to <<REDACTED CLASSIFIED GRADE A-A ULTRA>>.5

During this period was deployed to Betaforl to act as support gunner for an assault shuttle extracting a strike force under Operation Barras6. During the extraction the drop ship came under heavy fire and the Space Captain Tremain gave the order to Ensign Meson to abandon the shuttle.7

After Space Captain Tremain had ejected from the shuttle, Space Ensign Meson disregarded this order and attempted to pilot the shuttle himself, but lacking the skilled training to do so crash landed the shuttle, resulting in the immediate death of several of the Strike Force including all their officers.

Meson took charge on the ground as ranking Federation Officer to organise the defence of the crash site and a rescue operation was launched by Federation Marines, resulting in the incident now known as the Betaforl Massacre89

In the subsequent enquiry Meson was found guilty of disobeying a direct order, negligence and wilful destruction of Federation Property10 resulting in a sentence of Life Transportation to Signus Alpha.11

Due to his actions in trying to save the Strike Team and his subsequent command of them in the defence of the crash site however his sentence was commuted from Transportation to a dishonourable discharge.

Present:
Currently resident of Terran Dome 12 following his courts marshal and discharge from the Federation Navy. Surveillance shows him to be a frequent visitor to “The Blind Spot”.
Meson is low on credits for his grade and is waiting for reassignment of duty within the Federation.

Supplemental:
Raige Meson is left bitter by the events of his courts marshal and resentful towards the Federation. He may now be harbouring seditious tendencies and may warrant further surveillance.

His defence at his trial insists that SC Tremain had used the escape pod before anyone else had chance to join him, abandoning the shuttle to crash unpiloted which would have resulted in the death of all on board and that no order to abandon ship was given, though this was proved false by comms transcripts. Additionally in mitigation he suggests it was a conspiracy by SC Tremain to make him as a junior officer and foreigner the scapegoat for the incident that sparked off the Bateaforl Massacre and to protect SC Tremain’s career and that this scapegoating was supported by senior Space Commanders looking to deflect blame from themselves for the massacre.

His defence was hampered by the unusual fact the defence advocate was replaced on the day of the trial after the original advocate failed to report for duty but the evidence against him the form of the transcripts was unquestionable and the Judgement Machine took into account his ensuing behaviour to commute the standard sentence.

Footnotes:
1. Born outside of Federation controlled space.
2. Hi-Tech
3. Meson, R came into contact at this point with the smuggler and convict (NIAL)
4. Sidra System Action – Heavy ship to ship action between Federation ships and a pirate confederation. The pirates are destroyed and their remnants scattered.
5. Meson comes into contact with (HEATHER) at this time due to their work on the <<REDACTED CLASSIFIED GRADE A-A ULTRA>> project.
6. Operation Barras – see the special file on this Operation
7. It was noted in Meson’s defence that without a pilot the Strike Force would have been lost entirely. This however was considered and acceptable loss by the Federation and the disobeying of a senior officer’s order is still considered mutiny.
8. Betaforl Massacre – see special file on this incident. (ala Blackhawk Down)
9. At this point Meson also came into contact with the Federation Storm Trooper (MEG)
10. Federation Property: The Citizens of Betaforl.
11. The noted maximum security colony that Roj Blake was en-rout to when he escaped custody by stealing the Liberator.

Project: Hellburner

Classified: AAA – A ULTRA

Overview:

Top secret navy research project to investigate the possible training of precognition into the crew of pursuit ships so combat efficiency is maintained even at supra luminal velocity

Project Working Practice:

Working from the orbital research station Xaranor this project us using technology garnered from the Galactic War, as well as data and experience from the pursuit of the vessel “Liberator”.

Federation Scientists are experimenting to see if it is possible to either:

Condition precognitive subjects with the skill and abilities of Federation Pilots and Gunners
Condition Federation Pilots and Gunners with precognition.

This is done by recording mind states, reflexes, reactions and thought processes of the subjects and cross conditioning them into their respective recipients by use of hypnopaedia, high awareness activities and direct nerve impulse conditioning.

Flight Crew Status:

Results to date are inconclusive, the naval crew are selected from the best pool available but after training seem to take on little of the precognitive abilities, or at least they do not last long enough after conditioning and often generate other, unforeseen side effects and mental traumas.

The precog subjects however seem to show marked improvements after conditioning, but again only for short periods of time. They do also often lack the physical capabilities of the navy crews to be able to handle the flight stresses in combat simulations.

Additional Information:

All test crews have limited time use due to addiction and psychological impact of hallucinogenics and psychotropics

Weapon Systems Status:

The development of the XPH Pursuit & Interceptor vessels is limited by sufficient test crews, with the best naval officers being withdrawn at crucial stages by the local navy command to deal with situations and then not returned.

Supplemental - other incidents also require the moderation of crews no longer suitable for purpose

The flight frame is proving a solid and capable basis for the new engines

The engines are proving temperamental, they show exceptional performance at high power, but are unreliable and liable to flame out at low power.

Weapon systems are also power hungry but capable of projecting devastating firepower

Defensive systems are proving hard to replicate.

Supplemental - it seems most of the power, engine and nav problems are resolved. Main issue is with the crew/ship interface. All crew and tech support report unease within the ship. This is markedly heightened for in flight crew

Summary:

Project needs dedicated resources without interference from local navy command and also direct access to xenotech source materiel.

Supplemental - Projects change in status has improved results but at a higher rate of burnout for crew. Since the Meson incident the crews remaining are closer screened and are given increased memory modification in post flight debrief.

He is considering just why so many female space pilots apparently fly topless, naked or wearing very little...(considering the depictions found on the interwebs)
