Orbis Forum Play: General Notes
« on: January 31, 2012, 11:44:26 PM »
OK here's a quick few notes the forum game
...and a place to make comments about how things work or stuff you want to see changed

OOC = Out of Character (i.e. you the player).
IC = In Character (i.e. in the 1st person voice of your character).

The Barge and Ferryman thread:

This is the forum games preferred IC hang out for PC’s and NPC’s alike.
I realise some characters might not be social types and others might have other drinking spots their characters would in truth more likely frequent. But I’d like us all to try to maybe ‘tweak-your-concept-and-suspend-disbelief’ sufficiently to allow the B&F to continue to fill this role.

PLEASE NOTE: all conversations in the B&F are considered to be ‘casual’ and could be overhear-able if someone really wanted to. (If your character wanted to ‘lean in and have a quieter private few words’ we would do this by pm to the group to whom you’re addressing - but including me in this as well please!)

Posting on the Forum. (IC threads)
A few points of style to make us all consistent please:
•   Start any post with your characters name in bold.
        e.g. Wedlan
•   Use angled brackets to enclose any character actions, emotions, descriptions, etc...
e.g. <comes in wearing bright blue pantaloons on his head and casts a nervous look around the room>
•   Characters speech should be in italics, use capitals for shouting and underline a word if you have put stress or emphasis on it..
e.g. STOP LAUGHING! ...I know they look silly but they keep my head warm!
btw, If you write speech marks in your text I at least am going to assume your character is doing the ‘speech marks in the air with fingers’ thing.
•   If you want to include an OOC comment in your post, put it at the end, in brackets, prefixed ‘OOC:’ and make it Grey coloured.
e.g. (OOC: I personally wear pantaloons on my head for the same reason! ;) )

On the subject of coloured text.. We’ve used coloured text to indicate different languages and the GM descriptive text etc...
And (you don’t have to do this but) we have used google translate to get our faux foreign speech.

GM descriptive text : Brown
OOC comments : Grey
Pyraxian : Black / English - the native tongue of the city and the bulk of the forums speech.
Raphaelian : Teal / Dutch
Whitelandish : Blue / Norwegian
Yurwian : Slateblue / Portuguese
Dummonii : Green / Irish
Pelosian : Purple / Latin
Dromish : Orange / Arabic
Uru : Sienna / Swahili
Daemonic : Magenta / varies

General forum game politeness / Suspension of disbelief / Clevering it up a bit:

Hmm, OK this isn’t about being nice to each other per-say..  just some general points and thoughts... I’ll try to explain what I mean as best I can but feel free to look at me funny and shake your heads at the end! ;)

So what I mean is... please bear in mind the long delays in player and GM response that can sometimes occur when gaming via forum. Try to be wary of accidentally dead-ending the conversation by making a statement or comment to another character that requires for them to do something or respond before anyone else could realistically talk or do anything. IF something like this does occur accidentally, then I think it is best if everyone else works around it and carries on by ignoring the dead-endy bit, then we can rework the comment in later when more appropriate.

And If an argument or something with a frantic bit of to and fro breaks out don’t feel miffed if you get gazumped in making your statement by someone who can type faster, I’d still think it’s best to post your comment anyway, and we can all edit into the correct part of the conversations flow 'in our heads' as it were.

As for IC ‘private’ conversations – pm each other, please include me if you think it would be important that I the GM know, but if you’re just bitching about one of the other characters or discussing your characters shopping then feel free to leave me out!

Oh and whilst we’re on the subject, please restrict your conversations to plausible circumstances. So its fine to chat whilst two of your characters are catching a ferry across the harbour, but if one of you is in the B&F and the other is breaking into the Tremallu hall then not so plausible! ..and preferably like all RPGs keep in mind what your character knows as opposed to what you the player might know.

We work on the scouts honour system for this sort of thing so no-one is actually going to be checking up on you or anything.... jus .. you know it’s a bit pointless is all. :)

And just to underline again the requirement for a bit of patience with me and the game, sometimes your character won't get to do anything for a long time because whilst you are safely tucked in bed waiting for the new morning to break other characters are elsewhere doing something in detail which takes a lot of real time to get through.

I try to keep things fairly even for everyone but sometimes I can’t balance it and someone’s left waiting for ages!

Forum Fighting

As in, IC combat involving PCs, not players flaming each other! :)

So we’ve tried a few different methods but I’ll tell you how I intend to deal with this for the foreseeable.
Firstly there won’t be any dice rolling by players. I will have a copy of your character sheets and will make whatever rolls are necessary for you. This means you will have to trust me and accept it when I tell you you’ve fumbled for the third time in a row, or the enemy has managed to shoot you in the other eye as well!
I’ll also keep track of your wound capacity and any other variables on your behalf (of course if you ask me OOC I’ll give you a reasonably accurate indication of any of these values).

A fight itself will always begin with a GM statement of the initiating action and any other relevant general scene stuff, so a player who wants to start a fight will have to pm me, then I will work out the exact details of what happens.

Mostly after that we will engage in very loose round by round action.

Each round players will pm me their intended / desired actions and then when I have them all (or as many as I think I’m going to get within a reasonable time frame) then I will pm or forum post the whole group with a consolidated narrative of the rounds action.
Players that can’t make it to post in time will be controlled by me in the way I consider most in keeping with their character.
Occasionally I might try to speed up matters by taking an even more ‘narrative’ rather than ‘PC action – GM result’ format but it will depend on the general games circumstances.

...

Right-o then that’s everything I can think of right now. I would just like to say that even considering the slow pace of the forum game I’ve been having tremendous fun and in several ways its actually been superior to what we could have done round the table – in particular the amount of individual time I can spend on a PC ‘away from the table’ would be inconceivable in a regular game!

Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd share with you what we're currently working on behind the scenes as it were, just so you know we've actually been doing things! :)

Combat - generally no change from last tabletop game I ran - Claire's year hasn't thrown up any biggies so we're pretty happy with this.

Skills overhaul - we've taken on board the comments about the importance (or lack of ) for Skill ranks vs Stat-and-skill-points-alone and are currently working on a little compromise rule tweek that should make Skill Ranks increase in importance (and attractiveness). More info as we get closer to completion on this.

Magic systems - We will be introducing a new skill 'Arcane Attack' which becomes the attack chance of things that need one, and also covers the understanding of how to best position / use magic in combat scenarios (like "tactics of Magic" for you old-skool types), it will have specialisations in each tradition but is broad group useful (like dagger is to short-blades).

Geomancy is completely done now (excepting me scribbling in a few rune pics), apart from some minor adjustments to damage and range because of the latest combat rules mostly its pretty same as before. we've taken out the specific 'tables of cost' for rune creation and instead replaced with more general GM / player guidance.

Earthpower is also nearly finished - we're just putting a few more example rotes in and we have still to decide on if we should have some sort of role-specialisation bonuses - like for a healer druid / plant druid / weather druid etc... (tho Dan doesn't actually know we've still to discuss this! ;) )

Daemonology is still ongoing - its had quite an overhaul in terms of streamlining and ease of use (we hope!).. generally we're 90% there and Damo and Jakab are currently providing forum game play-testing of the new rules.

Hearts Fire - done and unchanged for now from Claire's game, Meg provided some excellent additions to the latest working that Claire used, and I haven't heard any thought on changes / additions from her group (apart from the rather clever navigation by the Nostrum thing).

Other things ongoing:

The calendar is being constantly updated (mostly with GM stuff so I can't show you) and we've been doing a lot of work on the political / social structure of Nosterpyrax plus have broadly worked on the general history / interactions of the various cultures.

My last game brought us the (canon) addition of the Hoileáin people and this has set us to thinking on a number of smaller cultural / country ideas
..and Claire's game... :o we'll I've yet to see the notes but who knows!! ;D

Lastly the Bestiary has had some working through - we've a number of new daemons (Grytharnak included) and the Plak from my game, and again from Claire... Titanoboa at least!?! ;D - We're limited on what we can do on this till we've finalised the other rules though.

Same goes for your PC conversion to the latest system - I know I've been promising conversion and XP for a while  :-[ but till we've done the other bits I don't want to do it, cause I'll only have to go back and do it all again!

...maybe when we've got to that point we can have a 'character conversion party' and all get drunk and make silly skill choices together!!  8)

Right - back from my Hols now and ready to start up the forum play again! :)
(although I'm kinda mega busy at work so probably won't actually be till Wednesday)

..so just wanted to touch base and check with you guys on your character situ and such.

Pio's (Bill) easy cause he's lurking in the back of the B&F thread.. but to save me trawling through my rather extensive PMs could the rest of you send me the last pm you either received from, or sent to, me or Dan.

Oh and if anyone is wanting to drop out or downgrade from active PC to part-time PC or NPC then let me know so I can start moving things along without keep bugging you for a reply :)

Btw - just thought I'd mention to all you orbis-online chaps that I know service is a bit hit and miss these last few days but I'm trying hard to have everything ready for my campaign to start next week, so I'm sort of accideliberately ignoring the forum game when I've got long spells of available time and only picking it up in those little five min spots that come up. :)

..if that makes any sense whatsoever!  ???
