A place to chat in character.

To make sure everyone follows what's going on, start each post with your character's name in bold, and put anything that's not what you're saying in italics, for instance, if you're adjusting your belt to make sure everyone sees your gun. Any spoken words leave as plain text.

Heartless

Looking around, proudly knowing he's in charge of the venue hosting this meeting, but still avoiding a certain someone's gaze.

Loud enough for everyone to hear:
Well, a fine speech, no doubt, no doubt, Any of my folks who're looking to join in, make certain you speak to me first. Fine ideals are one thing, but Cohen's got his own gang, and shun't be expecting any help for nowt from the Catch All's.

Magnus

Leans forward on table then pushes off and straightens back. Speaks through their respirator with no intention of taking it off:

So, what are you offering? I have been promised fortunes and all my desires. Whatís different about you?

Heartless

Looks you up and down, You're not one of my folk, so I'm not offering anything special. He sniffs, looking thoughtful, but I hear you know your way around an open wound, and if that doctorin' training includes some chemistry, we might have some-at to talk about.

Mouse

Shuffles over.

"Eye up Doc.  You need another drink?

Don't let heartless pick you up cheap.  Your one of the best choppers around.  Worth as much as a good bag man like soldier boy over there!"

Turns and try's to flash a crooked smile at Heartless

"Give her some due.  Good Docs who are willing to get stuck in arent common"

Why dont you sit down and hash it out?

Mouse adjust's his googles.

: Re: The George Inn

Richard sits unmoving watching from a distance. He says nothing for now but he misses little.

Magnus

Still staring at heartless, they turn their head slightly towards Mouse Hello Mouse. I could do with another drink. Directs full attention too Mouse I'm not interested in what he has to say now anyway.

Quietens voice so only Mouse can hear He is more interested in people like you. He sees the shine of a gun and offers the shine of a coin in return. The gangs round here all seem to have well trained doctors as it is. They seem a little too well equipped for the area we are in. I would expect to see them more near the wealth of the city not in the middle of this war zone.

Whispers back.

"Welcome to the heart of the black market and illicit trade of the city of London."

Overhearing a fraction of the conversation, but clearly missing the gist, Yep, we've got some folks who're a might better than barber surgeons, but what I have a need for is a scientist. Like the mad killer broad the Beck Street Bastards have got workin' fer 'em.

Magnus

Mumbles quietly into pint glass. Six more surround Magnus. Their respirator is hanging off of their face but you still cannot make out their features. Long wisps of hair are falling out of their hat. They are hunched over the bar and are bouncing their leg uncontrollably.
: Re: The George Inn
: Dean.Pye November 08, 2018, 08:22:18 PM
Mouse.

Sipping his drink and listening to whatever disturbing nonsense Karl is talking about casually looks over to Magnus to start a conversation that not about killing.

KARL

Talking to Mouse
Wasnít it great to get our hands dirty again. Makes me miss the old job.
Turns to Annabel noticing how drunk she is and turns back to Mouse
Good shooting today, I see you havenít lost your skills with a gun. We lack men who can shoot well.
: Re: The George Inn
: PaperWitch99 November 08, 2018, 09:55:48 PM
Magnus

Sways slightly and loses balance on stool. Tries to reach for something and ends up knocking a pint glass smashing it on the floor.

Shit! Mumbles something under breath

Reattaches respirator and moves to an empty table. Puts head in one hand and traces the lines of the wood on the table with the other.
: Re: The George Inn
: Hunk of Huddersfield November 09, 2018, 10:12:44 AM
KARL

Moves towards the table Annabel is on and whispers quietly
you've had enough to drink there lass. ya in shock so pull yourself together and put on a brave front.
: Re: The George Inn
: Captain Shortworth November 09, 2018, 10:50:45 AM
Two young women hearing the crash of breaking glass look up, and make eye contact with each other before moving, one to help clear the glass, the other to take a seat opposite Magnus. They look alike, but not not so similar as be obviously related.

Joan

Don't worry about him big lad, spilling beer and breaking glasses is a quite Tuesday afternoon round these parts. If he wants some company to get him home, I can sort something.

Jane

Walks up behind Joan, and leaning over, gently places a small glass vial on the table, And if he needs something to steady his nerves, then I'm his girl.
: Re: The George Inn
: Secretly a doom bot November 09, 2018, 11:39:33 AM
Richard

Has been lurking at the edge of the conversation but suddenly cuts in like a knife through flesh

"My Mother always warned me about taking candy from strangers, so what is it precisely you are trying to  sell to my... friend

Mutters under his breath to himself

"Yesyesfriendthatstherightwordyes"

Back to the group

"And I don't want any bullshit, just a straight honest answer"
: Re: The George Inn
: Captain Shortworth November 09, 2018, 11:50:00 AM
Jane

Looks up at the approaching figure, Aren't you a handsome chap, with your lovely clothes?! Don't worry none darlin', there's no folding changing hands, so I ain't selling anything.

Joan

Now now, sister of mine, no need to get defensive, we're all friends here... One of her hands drops down to sit casually near the semi-auto holstered at her hip, not close enough to be threatening
: Re: The George Inn
: Secretly a doom bot November 09, 2018, 06:54:56 PM
Richard

Richard moves his head to the side as if he's confused, he takes a seat, making a big show of it he reaches into the pockets of his Coat so all six of his knives are visible before pulling out a toothpick and making a small drama out of getting pieces of chicken out of his teeth

"You speak like politicians, speak your intentions with my group clearly or stop bothering a good few man trying to enjoy a drink after a hard days work."

: Re: The George Inn
: PaperWitch99 November 09, 2018, 07:28:35 PM
Magnus

Reaches across the table and grabs the little vial.

What is this anyway? Is it what the big man feeds the city with?  Shakes the vial and then lays it down on the table again.

Stares the woman straight in her eyes  If I wanted some company to walk me home then I would ask a street rat.

Stands up abruptly  I have work to do. Night Karl. Night Mouse.

Nods towards Richard and staggers out of the front door.
: Re: The George Inn
: Hunk of Huddersfield November 09, 2018, 11:04:29 PM
KARL

nods towards Annabel raising his tophat as he does
notices how she's stumbling to the door as she leaves

Evening to you too, are you sure you can make your way home alright.
: Re: The George Inn
: Captain Shortworth November 10, 2018, 09:23:30 AM
Jane

With a practiced hand, she moves her hand to pick up her drink, and palms the vial too, making it seem to disappear. Well, now we know nothing's been sold, or even given as a gift to a gentleman who looks in need.

Joan

Indeed, one tries to be nice, in this cruel, cruel world, and all you get is suspicion. She gives another look to Richard, but if you really want to know, we call it Wake.
: Re: The George Inn
: PaperWitch99 November 10, 2018, 03:30:13 PM
Magnus

Continues out the front door  I'm fine Karl.
: Re: The George Inn
: Secretly a doom bot November 10, 2018, 04:36:40 PM
Richard

Looking towards Magnus, he talks cordially but there's a certain inflection in his voice that could signify glee?

"Do take care on the way home Doctor, I hear the streets are full of all kinds of reprobate scum, I wouldn't want you to stumble down the wrong alleyway and end the night with your crimson guts all other the floor, I do hate to think what would have happened to dear October had you not been available physician

He turns to Joan

"What does Wake do and what's the going rate?"
: Re: The George Inn
: Captain Shortworth November 10, 2018, 05:04:08 PM
Jane

It helps people when they're down. And you've a twinkle about you that makes me think you're very much... up.

Joan

And we're all friends here, so if you feel the need, we can help you out, gratis, because we like you.

Richard

Stops picking his teeth and throws the pick aside contemptuously, Picks up the bottle of wake from the table and starts looking closer at the bottle and it's contents

"So the first hits free ladies? That's what you're telling me, well I guess I will take this little thing, be good for the days when I am feeling down"

He adjusts his goggles when they slide the vial accross.

Joan

Keeps an eye on Mouse, her hand always close enough to her holster so she could draw if needed, but not so close as to be offensive.

Jane

To Richard, Consider us the advance party. We let people know what's out there, and if they like it, we make sure they can find a salesman when in need.

Pockets the Wake

"Well I know where to come if I need any more, thank you ladies"
: Re: The George Inn
: Captain Shortworth November 14, 2018, 09:33:18 AM
Monday, August 24th, approaching midnight.

Most patron have given it up for the night, but a few stragglers sit in booths, nursing small beers, keeping their heads down, fighting their own battles. At the bar stand two tall individuals. The lanky one with two very nice pistols at his hips seems to be doing most - if not all - the talking, while the other, not quite so tall, but built he could juggle gravestones as a hobby, slowly sips on what looks like gin, responding with nods of his head, or single syllable answers.

Titch

...and of course, you're going to disagree with me, as you always do, but the time you spend working on your physique, and honing your skills, is the equal of the time I spend keeping the firing mechanism clear and practicing trick shots! Just because it takes me less time to maintain such things than it does you, does not mean that we are not equally valuable to the gang, and likewise, it does not mean...

Deep

Nods his acceptance, but otherwise lets Titch do all the talking

sipping his drink and then turns to titch

Always good to see a man who looks after his guns as good as himself in this world
: Re: The George Inn
: Captain Shortworth November 14, 2018, 10:33:48 AM
Titch

It's not just the guns though! A well oiled machine is made of many moving parts, and they must all mesh together, so I make my own bullets, to my own specifications for my custom pistols, and even the holsters are tooled to my own needs to reduce wear and speed up the draw! Deep here seems to think that it's still a less elegant way to go about doing business though...
: Re: The George Inn
: Hunk of Huddersfield November 14, 2018, 10:42:57 AM
KARL

I agree with you there it sounds like the most elegant way to do business. A man can only trust himself to do things right in this world. I myself always make sure that nothing is left to chance when it comes to my business

I've killed to many to remember you don't spend 8 years in the deathwatch without your fair share of blood and gore. You only feel scared and shocked the first time you see something like them.
Just have to look at you and Magnus when that thing appeared in the factory both frozen in fear.

motions towards mouse and himself
we have been through worse than that a hundred times over whilst we served and you could see our instincts kick in as it moved for October

Richard

Tilts his head for a few seconds as if he's having a hard time processing what you said to his perception of reality

"It is to my eternal shame I must admit to being entranced by the creature in the evil factory, but it wasn't quite fear, more admiration, yes it was an abomination to the work of god, but there was a beautiful elegance to the thing. Shame October was hurt so despite everyone's quick thinking, seems the young must always suffer due to the actions of the old."

Raises his glass in a toast

"Well I thank you for reminding me why I personally choose not to bother with friends."

Turns head quickly as if about lash out but responds in a calm tone.  Karl, I think I will take you up on that offer more often. This world is starting to get to me.

Pulls out straw and starts to drink rest of beer through mask.

Richard

Heads back to the table with a new beer

"You know Magnus you might have an easier time drinking if you took your respirator off, I mean I'm no Doctor but it's safe inside right?"
: Re: The George Inn
: PaperWitch99 November 14, 2018, 10:57:44 PM
Magnus

You can never be too safe Richard. Being a Doctor you get to see what this air does to you, even when you think you are safe.

Sips drink.  So where did you get to anyway. Mouse said he ran into you.
: Re: The George Inn
: Secretly a doom bot November 14, 2018, 11:14:41 PM
Richard

"Well I suppose, but a life lived behind a respirator... feels quite sad I suppose, I cannot let my fears control me and we all have to die someday. We must make the most of what we have whilst we are here, I certainly do.

As for me I was doing some reconnaissance work with a nicer crowd than we tend to associate with, hence my clothes. I'm... very grateful to Mr Cohen for recruiting me you see. This cause means so much to me as I'm sure it does to all you."

From the sorrowful expression on his face it would be quite easy, if you were the type to think the best of people to believe in this moment Richard has let down his walls and is being totally sincere, certainly there is no mocking tone under the words, certainly his smile is because he is grateful to be among friends and not a mocking smirk

Mouse

"Surely someone can say something remotley cheery?"

Mouse procedes to start singing.

"In good old Queen Victoria's day
Industrial revolution
Bosses said 'Please, we need more employees'
We needed a solution

Who will climb our chimneys?
Who will power our grids?
Victorian families to desperately poor
They'll let us employ their kids for

Work, terrible work
From very young ages
Up chimneys to clean
Paid pitiful wages
Work, terrible work
Pins make you work faster
If we grow too big
Get sacked by the master!

Now you're all in my employ
Cleaning in the factory
We're not very strong
And the hours are long
This work is unsatisfactory!

There not to get caught in spokes
Or trap our hands in gages
To stop machines and get you out
Will cost you a week's wages!

Work, terrible work
There's no health and safety
So if we get hurt
They will just replace me
Work, terrible work

Now that I am short of cash
I have to pick pockets
Wallets from gentlemen
And lady's lockets

Small enough to get away
Hardly ever caught
And if we are, we're kids you see
To cry is what we're taught

Work, terrible work
Dangerous and demeaning
No time to complain
Get back to your cleaning
Work, terrible work
Guess what we are dreaming
School, glorious school!
Wonderful school!
Marvellous school!
Wish we went to school!"

Thereís no decision to make we need to get into the Smeddlington house

If anything we need to look for our missing monster.  Sighs

If we want the revolution to be successful we need to start off slow. We need to plant the seed in the mind of every man and woman in London. Once that seed grows then it will be easy for us to chop the head of the snake, or the aristocrats in our case.
: Re: The George Inn

KARL

Well if you want we can send you into the Smeddlington house as a maid but I doubt they will employ male maids so you might have to get some makeup done first. Itís your choice. Myself, Mr Mole, Mouse, Magnus and Peter look far too old to be the maids they will employ. So itís either you or October and I know who would make a much better maid

"Lots of monsters in this city Magnus...

You want to be softly softly with the government that's your choice, but I'm only in this because Cohen is serious, we need to do something big to inspire the people, not sit back and distribute leaflets on socialism.

As for your statement Karl, are you really dim enough to believe the rich only hire Maids? That no men work in the great houses? How do we know that these people have need? That October has the skill set, At the least she'll need etiquette training I imagine."

well howíd you expect an ex-shoulder to know about the upper classes. now youíve told me that there are male jobs to do in that house with as much access to the house as that of a maid. Youíve got the clothes and the etiquette so there we go. Plan sorted my dear friend.

Magnus

I not saying anything against a fire or a small explosion. Just make it look like the government has done it and that's the seed planted. Then you can do what ever your planning. If you run into this and cause mass destruction then the people we are wanting to free will be scared and turn against us instead.

We will have to see what Cohen wants us doing next. I just hope that he was able to scavenge more of those men from that lab.

The way to make them hurt, Richard, is to make them think they are in control. That's when you turn up the heat. That's when you can enact whatever horrible fantasies you might have.

And I agree Karl, I think Richard should be the assistant. I think you would be best providing cover for us whilst me and Richard deal with the family matters.

Smiles with genuine warmth and moves closer, pulling a stool with him to sit close to Magnus, There's a fine balance in St. Cornelius. Five gangs, two with history and clout, and three that would never risk joining sides because the other two would likely swing the other way and throw things off.

Stops to drink for a second, looking thoughtful. But. One of those could be double crossing. It would get messy. An extra gang, if they were going to be based here? Well, the bosses would be trying to court their favour. Even a small starting operation like yourselves could throw some weight around.

I'd never accuse the Tailor of doing this on purpose mind. I've heard him speak about the need for revolution often, and I don't doubt his seriousness. I would say though, if I was talking to the leader of a new dozen, that they should expect the other gangs to be wary around them.

Speaking seriously in the same manor he did in the labratory/warehouse.

"Thank you for your advice.   We are not a gang, but appreciate we represent a change to the status quo.  We do not have a leader as such.  So far people have listened to me when the bullets start flying but thats not the same thing by half.

We will do our best to avoid upsetting the apple cart.  And I will do everything required to make sure no one thinks were a soft target.  Remembering that my backup (looks at Karl)  can operate from very far way!

If that fails Richard and Mr Mole will just burn the stupid Twonks house down.

If we do step on anyone's toes I would appreciate the heads up.  We are not looking for a fight inside the neighbourhood.   But if someone stupid Twonk starts one I will finish them."

Mouse pauses. his hands goes to his goggles but he thinks twice. Looks at Twitch and reconsiders not with fear but with the look of someone who just stopped themselves from doing something they would regret.

His demeanour relaxes to a more normal Mouse level.

"Everyone says your a good egg Twitch.  If a loud one.   I know you mean right by us.  We signed up to fight toffs and do stuff the other gangs can't.  We will watch our step and try to keep of peoples fingers and toes."

Curls fist whilst looking at Mouse. Then relaxes.

Looking more at Richard than anyone else.  No one is kidnapping any children. I think we need to find out more information about this house. If they have something to do with that factory then they will have some sort of security, they might expect something like us to go lurking.

I agree we need progress but we need to be careful as well. We could always grab one of the maids or servants, they might give us more information without the attention.

As long as no harm comes to them. Remember these are the people we are wanting to free. We would need to watch the house, then when we are talking to one, we could learn about the houses routine.

This way we can give October time to heal and we still get in the house. We will need supplies and me and Richard will need more doctor like clothes, nothing Cohen won't be able to help with. Anyone else got any ideas?

Turns round before getting to the bar.

And this is coming from the person who agreed to kidnap and maybe murder children. I have my morals so I don't become like one of those monsters we are against. We have all been in rough places it just seems that I was the one to rise above it. Having morals does not make me weak and does not make my points any less valid. All night I have been suggesting plans that won't result in the immediate death of the people we intent to interrogate, and all night you have been treating me like a fool.
Revolutions take time Richard. You can't blow up a building and hope the government runs away. There will be chaos and you will have your sought after killings but certain things have to be put in place before that can happen.
History will be written and we will be the ones writing it. I intend to humiliate the government and the aristocrats so nothing like this hell hole is ever created again.

Goes to the bar and comes back with two whiskeys. Places one in front of Richard and takes one for themselves.   Drink up. We might actually like each other when we are drunk.

Tuns head away from the group and takes gas mask off so they can down their drink. Places the gas mask back on and faces the rest of the group.

Notices Richard staring at them. Looks into distance just past his head. Talks to no one in particular.

My father was a good man. A doctor, but much better than me. He inspired me to help people to go to the university and study. He helped men no matter their background. They were all people in need of help, so he did just that.

Then this world turn him into a monster. Mind you it was my fault. I didn't notice till it was too late. I watched as the corruption spread through his body helpless as he turned into another man. I tried my best to stop it to slow it down maybe, hold onto the person I knew but nothing seemed to get through to him.

I thought I could save him, maybe talk to him and convince him. Maybe sweeten his drink now and again. I tried most things, even getting him a new friend. I thought it had worked, he was getting better but it was only false hope. He even dragged my mother down with him. That's when I had to turn around and leave him.

In the end I got some of his corruption. I feel it every night when I go to sleep. Its not fun you know. Not being able to sleep. Staying awake all night long, aware of every little noise that goes around your room. Its as if your waiting for something but don't know what.

Right folks, I don't care if you've not got homes to go to, unless you've special dispensation to stay from 'im up above, you're finishing your drinks and fucking off.

You know what Deep, my friend, I think even we should be off about our shadowy and intriguing business. The two of them quaff back the last of their dinks, and titch drops a few extra coins on the bar before tipping his hat to you, both then restrap their respirators and make their way into the night.

Beyond revolution?  Pauses for a while.

We each have our place in this world but that place might vanish once we have finished this revolution. Our long term goals could be setting up our fresh starts, but we are all different so I don't know if that's something we can work towards as a group.

Looks over in to the distance, then looks back to the group quickly.  Actually we might be able to blow something up. The lab. If any high ranking government officials see that the building has blown up they will start worrying. They might start making mistakes. One slip up might be all we need.

It doesn't need to be big just enough to get their attention. It will also make other people start questioning. We would need to stage something so it would lead back to the government. Any ideas?   Looks round the table.

Roused from opium induced silence he breaks off into a tirade without thinking

Magnus you magnificent bastard that just might be a good idea. We need a symbol against those who would be our God, to show that their ivory towers are nothing more than sandcastles to coming tide of revolution. If we could coincide it with some form of leaflet drop entailing what wicked deeds we learnt in that charnel house we could potentially rouse some more of the general populace into questioning those who rule... Sadly I do believe such an act of deliberate terrorism may enfeeble our current efforts with Smedlington house as well as alerting the law to active terrorists. For now we are best as mites scurrying betwixt their gilded sheets. When we have more support and protection, and certainly, more information we can with impudence and show that the cage they have built for us is not strong enough and that they will fall. As for after... Deeply inhales, pausing as if not to continue I do not know. Sadly the systems in place keep us safe from the outside and there may be some necessary measures that must be taken to keep the city and its inhabitants safe but they are all but speculation for a day that seems so far away...

Resigned, Peter settles back into his seat, the opium relaxing him he ponders what future there will be and when

Over a few minutes, you all have noticed that Heartless and Nutty made their way behind the bar from a door that you presume leads upstairs. They were easy to miss at first, as they seemed happy to stay out of the way, but in conversational lulls around the bar, those paying attention notice they are having a whispered conversation that seems agitated. They are too far away to hear anything, though, and eventually Nutty walks from behind the bar and starts circulating, leaving Heartless alone with a slightly furrowed brow.

As the Brownian motion of crowds dictate, Nutty eventually finds himself near your table.

We may not have been formally introduced, but I assure you, I'm no stranger. Last week I was here to welcome in the wounded revolutionaries.

My name's Nutty, and I'm second to Heartless. Your mood doesn't matter, but after the obviously vague answer to an innocent question, I couldn't help but feel you might be trying to hide something. In my line of business, that gets my attention, especially when you're in my pub.

But, I can guess from the body language that you're not used to soft words, so instead of carrying on like we're both inches from drawing steel, I will instead offer you the welcome of this establishment. Titch informs me that you have no intentions of interfering in the delicate balance we have in St Cornelius.

Oh yes. Let me just get my book out.

Rummages round their backpack and pulls out an old weathered leather bound journal. A pattern of twisting thorns are embossed onto the leather, circling a silver pendant fixed onto the front. On the pendant a single crow stands ensnared by a ring of thorns. They flick through the journal. Pages have been stuffed in and others very clearly have been torn out. They land on a page titled Friday 28th of August 2105. One hand covers the rest of the book only allowing onlookers to see the page with the current date.

Pushes up their glasses and quickly reads their entry.   Here we are. The people we think are the Smedlingtons wear similar style respirators to me but obviously a lot fancier. They both had gold and silver engravings on them from what we could see. The woman also had blonde hair. Other than that we couldn't get a good look at them.
Something doesn't sit right with me however. David Harcroft seemed to speak down to them, something a butler should never do. No one was ever rude to them but no one seemed to want to talk to them. I think we need to have a word with Mr Harcroft, he might know more than he is letting on.

The door opens and in walks a familiar figure dressed not in his finery but in his traditional long coat and shabby street performer clothes, he goes over to the bar and orders a pint then proceeds to come over to the table

Looks carefully at Richard whilst they walk over and sit down. Their hands seem to grasp the journal slightly tighter, before closing it. One hand is placed on the front of the journal and their fingers trace the pattern of the thorns. The same warmth fills Magnus's eyes but there is a calculating stare behind it.

The fight was wonderful Richard! Shame you had to miss it. There was just something about it, something dark but oddly beautiful. It was almost like poetry the way the fighters moved around the ring. Someone must teach me everything about these fights, they are fascinating.

"It needs to be fast.  Capable of dropping a target with the minimum of fuss and attention.  Repose is what you suggested.  There £40 in that envelope.  So its up to you.

But the mission brief is quick and fast acting preferably instantaneous silencing of the target.   I dont want them screaming or making a din.    Duration is far less important.  I assume we can use other agents for that.

It would be nice if we do not use anything horribly illegal that will raise attention to us but its not critical to the operation.

You said you could only drop one person before the others noticed.   I figure 4 of us two being sharpshooters should do the trick especially if your sister can get them to turn their back to us.

The other group is the dogs problem.    But with the range on that thing we can always assist if they need it.

I can hit a moving target at a quarter of a mile with one of those things.  I suspect Karl can as well.

We used them for dealing with "things" in the deathwatch.

Rose

She sighs and looks up from what she was showing Magnus with piercing glare

Under her breath so quiet only Magnus will hear

"Of all the condescending rubbish I've had in my life..."

She pauses and takes in a deep breath before rattling off her points at a thousand miles an hour

"Ok, ok, ok I see how it's going to be Mouse, clearly for whatever reason you see yourself as leader of this little group, your word goes and all. That's acceptable, I have no interest in being in charge of anything, I just want to see some rich entitled monsters suffer and be left to my research, you can be in charge, I might choose not to help you if I think your plans are stupid but there's no threat from me here. That said I am in every way a professional in my field and I would advise listening.

Now to the matter of the Syringe's for my dart gun, I accept the possibility their might... might be bigger military grade versions with bigger darts, sadly given I am working within my own personal means this is nothing I would be able to access and in addition"

She lays the dart gun on the table and opens the chamber

"My current gun cannot take any bigger without being retrofitted to take a larger shot, given you keep emphasising that time is of the essence this seems to not be viable. Now if you want to go out and find military grade versions be my guest the variant I use can be found in any rifle shop and you really don't need me to go buy you one, the advantage to this being if I'm not having to go on stupid errands for publicly available equipment I can spend the day creating the ripose myself, which will be cheaper and more reliable"

Taking the gun off the table all while continuing to stare Mouse right in the eyes

"As for your knowledge of alchemy it is clear you know a few useful herbs but nothing of my art on the whole. Alchemy takes years to master and even then it can be an inexact science. I dismiss the shopping list on principle as rude and arrogant, the opposite of professional, but since my capabilities are in doubt lets list off the options for tranquilizers and why I suggested ripose

Firstly Chloroform, issues being whilst it's easy to make it has to be inhaled and takes about two minutes, hence my ruling it out

Secondly Ether, similar issues to chloroform except even worse, ruled out

Thirdly Repose my preferred option and something I use myself, a strong sedative that acts instantaneously, however I have known strong men shrug off it's effects and keep going, even then the time out can be anywhere from six minutes to an hour unconscious it is not 100% effective like any drug, that said I have the facility to make it, it's only one hour to create a dose and the materials come to about three shillings with the good doctors help I believe in one day I could make between eight to twelve doses without suffering burnout, it is the best option but it has drawbacks.

Fourthly Thrope Tranquilzer, now this one was ruled out due to my lack of experience with making it even if I know how to theoretically, it is harder to produce than repose, more expensive and has a chance of killing humans, the final thing that ruled it out is it takes a few seconds before it takes hold of it's target and you wanted instantaneous hence I ruled it out

Fifthly morphine, ruled this one out due to it not being as effective as repose

So you see Mouse I considered all angles, if you wish Repose made it shall be, but it's not a wonder drug, wonder drugs don't exist, in some ways it may be easier to simply create as much vitriolic shell and Alchemists fire and bombard these poor gentlemen, as always whatever you decide, my skills are available for the Revolution, but do not in future insult what you do not know. I wish for us to have a more cordial relationship and you are making this hard."

She goes back to her talk with Magnus

reaches down to the syringe and inspects it. especially the needle.

Whistles at the large surgical steel tip.

"Yep these are them, dangerous.  will penetrate a human skull most of the time.

Will pierce the hide of other things more often then not.

So ignoring the blather, what your saying is repose is the best choice.  But not always effective?

So aiming to at least double dose targets seems like the solution.   That will not make them cry out in pain I assume?"

You might as well shoot them if your going to give them a double dose. Doses are there for a reason- its not a magical amount that you can easily adjust just to make it more effective.

If we use conventional noisy, familar weapons in the middle of the print district we will have the bobbies on us in no time assuming we survive whoever is in the house.

As it stands we are taking a risk using the syringe gun.   Hopefully distance and the unfamiliar sound of it will help.  We may even be able to time it with the middle of the print run.

Raises eye brows and sighs.

That's something I need to do. Yes.    Sits back in chair and rubs head.

He is getting worse by the day. I have never seen him this bad in the seven years I have known him. When he took the- Looks around - 'Medicine' last night I think it has left him in a worst state. By some miracle he could come out of it on his own, or we may need to look for someone else for the job. I will try to speak to him tomorrow, but sadly I'm not a psychologist, so do not have the best skills for this situation. I have picked up some tricks from my time at the university and through my practice but he may need someone with better qualifications.

"I was going to question if we really are worse than bunch of untrained children who kill to survive but this group really doesn't seem to be in the best of shapes, perhaps instead of rushing ahead with a half formed plan we should slow down to allow for some recovery and perhaps do recon in that time, if nothing else the situation isn't helped by the guards being on high alert in the print district. But again I stress, the dart gun is not a quiet weapon like you seem to believe"

She slams her hand on the table

"No gunshot but hardly discreet, I worry as a group you are blinded by the issue of October, we cannot be eager to run into a massacre, you've had a major loss, a reveal that one of you was not what you believed and clearly this Karl may be off the table? There's no shame in taking a step back"

Winces

Please don't do that again. I have been getting terrible headaches lately. I need to raid my cupboards for some decent pain killers.

Perhaps we need to start thinking about other approaches. Maybe a distraction may help. I know I have gone on about it, but I believe this might be the best option we have. If there are a lot of men, which I imagine there will be with the nature of this whole situation around the Smedlingtons, then it might be best to make sure half of them won't be there when we do decide to strike. We might be able to catch some people before they step foot near that building, unless it is like the laboratory where they remained in their nest.

If we were to make some form of distraction, it would need to be more urgent that what ever they are guarding. If this building has similar functions to the Laboratory then they may have more of that gas, which is far more valuable than some burning building or damsel in distress.

Looks at Violet, then turns back to the others.

Fear usually makes a man flee from his post. This might be an approach we might be able to work with. Rose are there any drugs that cause the brain to become over active, maybe something that stimulate the Limbic system itself? Maybe something for the visual cortex as well, cause them to hallucinate. A normal injection maybe too slow, maybe if the drug was volatile and could be inhaled? This might be able to effect a large group of them. This could cause them to run away, or if we are lucky they could attack each other if the drug is strong enough. I know of some recreational drugs but is there anything more efficient?

Sorry my mind wanders. We need to get everyone together to discuss. Each of us has skills which could aid in trying to tackle the problem of this house.

"Our catch there is delivering any gas, liquid whatever is correct term is.

I have a way of disabling people at closer range.   But its even less reliable against that many people.

Time is a factor here.   We do not know if October is alive.  But the chances likely reduce as time goes on.   And we get the Dogs help partly for revenge partly because like (pause) some of us they want to try and save her if possible.

I would like someone to do a test in terms of how loud the syringe guns are.  I am hopping a quarter of a mile is enough.   Like I said thats a shot me and Karl can make.    I do not know about you, Rose or Peter.  IF we time it with the print runs we may have enough noise to cover.  But that poses other challanges as the district gets busy at the start and end of the print run.

One of the advantages of this approach is that if we are made we can fall back in good order and cover each other.   It doesnt mitigate the risk of discovery.  But it increases our survivability

Like I said its less then ideal.  But we may have people (pause) someone, in there.

Get another workable plan on the table by tomorrow night we can look at it.

But we need to be in position to go with a workable plan.

Magnus. Karls pretty much essential to this.  Without him the chances of success drop...(pause) a lot.

Sighs and looks down at her drink before speaking

"Listen, I'm sorry if this comes off cruel or mean spirited but what makes you think this girl is still alive? I know these people, I get how they operate, I had five years of hell in a deep dark prison and I got off lightly, I wasn't part of a movement like this or breaking into places I should not have been. If her and this other fellow were caught there are two options, either they would have killed them on the spot and made the bodies disappear, the second is they would have moved them to some deed dark impenetrable prison on the other side of the city followed by enchained interrogation then death. If it is the first charging in like this will not help our cause, it will not get us revenge, it will just get us killed, and dead makes us useless to everyone. If it the second, well for one they'd already have moved her, she's not in that house anymore, personally I doubt this is the case given the government had not had us quietly killed off, because she would have talked by now and we would be dead. Please do not think I did not care, I care deeply for every goddamn injustice in this city but from what you have told me this girl made her own life choices, no one around this table is responsible for what happened, but I will not be part of a group that will let guilt lead them into a suicide run.

Lofty principles are all but useless if no one is around to see you live by then. We are an anarchist cell, all the mistakes I have heard and seen from my cell and yours suggest a step back is needed, we need to think with our heads not our hearts and kill the bastards for what they have done."

Starting to sound irritated.

Mouse, I never said anything about abandoning the current plan. That's all it is, a plan, and we need to do this as a group. You have helped us through some rough situations but I think this may require something more. We all seem to be working separately and not as a group, that why October and Richard are possibly dead. Cohen brought us together as a group and that's how we should act. We say there is no leader yet some people tend to issue orders more than others.

Sighs

If you still want to have the meeting with the Dogs may I suggest inviting them into our meeting, instead of planning one that I don't think anyone has heard about until now. We need to communicate more. Otherwise I can't see how this group will function never mind survive.

She winks, then her face gets serious, she looks to Mouse.

Mouse you are going to get us killed, more specifically you are going to get Rose killed. I donít take too kindly to the fact you have elected yourself leader. A good leader listens to those who express concerns and youíve ignored concerns from two people in front of you. I will forget the fact that you have been rude to me on several occasions and acted as though Iím not in the room. We will have a discussion about what we are going to do. Rose i am currently forbidding you from going on with the whims of this man until he is calm enough to speak rationally. At the end of the day mouse, you are the one who has a meeting with the dogs, not us, there was no involvement of us when you decided to contact them, so they are your business. I would have been all for meeting new people, but you seem to have this habit of not thinking about anyone else, Rose and I have only known you a short amount of time, but you disregard what your friend says and that I canít abide by. So until you can speak to me, Magnus and Rose properly I want nothing to do with your plan. We are to be consulted not ordered.

She slams her empty glass on the table and storms over to the bar

Finishing her gin and putting the glass on the table

"Well I bloody am darling"

Shouting to Violet

His voice low aimed at Magnus.  As sympathetic as his voice can ever be.

Her voice is cold.

Mouse, we have known each other for a week, don't act as if you know or care for me.

Reattaches respirator and begins writing in their journal again.

**Since we're at a planning stage, there's no reason to not have this thread as a tool.

From what I remember, you were all still together - mostly - at Mouse's, rather than the pub, but happy to let the conversation continue.

If people have questions about routes, lines of sight, building layouts or what have you, ask away, and since some research has been done, I'll answer as much as you would know**

** It's a lazy Tuesday afternoon in the George, Tuesday 15th September in fact Moved time on two weeks, instead of the one I had said earlier, but this means injuries would be healed enough to mean no negatives . A few folks without a job are slowly supping on small beers, and a few gang members with nothing better to do are playing dominoes over cups of tea.

The four surviving characters can enter when they like, and chat away. If you've sent me a character that has been approved, you can join in the chat, but you won't know who everyone is, or that you'll be working with them, as Cohen will be making the introductions later on in the evening.**

In one of the dark corners of the George a tall man can just be made out (as if he doesnít want anyone to see him) but this man is slightly recognisable to Peter asif he had seen him a few years ago. He surveys everyone inside the pub and those that enter as if sizing them up

Enters the George, see's Magnus, she struggles to hide her surprise and for a second her hand flicker to the inside of her coat, she's tense, she moves to the bar and orders her usual order of terrible Gin, it's a double shot tonight, pausing for a few seconds she debates which table to take before heading over to Magnus

"Magnus"

She nods

"May I?"

She gestures an empty seat across from the good doctor

Taking longer than they usually would they return back with another cup of tea.

Not the best thing but its better than drinking anything alcoholic right now.

I believe so. She has been talking to me and she seems calmer. However she doesn't seem right. Something it off about her but I can't tell what yet. It might have something to do with this.

We both have pasts we don't want to talk about. I was forced to relive mine far too many times.

They wince from the pain in their head.

Made me remember who I was.  An unnerving smile spreads across her face.

Again they wince from the pain. The smile vanishes.

However, we must carry on Rose. All we can do is learn from our past and prey we do not make the same mistakes again. I hope that we can call each other friends one day Rose, even with all that has happened.

After about 10 minutes.

Look. I didn't mean to shout. Your obviously trying to get on my good side, considering you wanted my head two weeks ago. I can assure you that I'm not going to lose control. I have had two weeks to figure this out. Tell me what you found about the Wake and Z-Gas.

Laughs. She writes in big letters at the top of the page Rose's notes:

It would be strange if I wrote a paper! It would turn a few heads if the academics saw our names!

I thought I had heard of effects like this somewhere before. Do you think this mystery ingredient is causing it to become more potent? Could you separate it out? Maybe we could do some more tests on that to try to narrow down what it is?
: Re: The George Inn
: Secretly a doom bot February 15, 2019, 12:30:19 AM
Rose

"Possibly, but my worry is this ingredient  is outside my purview, it's probable I need to do more research in different fields to have the best chancr of figuring out what it is.
 Hence my extra reading

She gestures to the book but then leans in to Magnus

"It's entirely possible the time for experimenting with wake is over and more drastic measures are needed.  But the z gas takes priority from what you have said yes?"

She sits back on her chair

Almost whispering.

Yes. I must agree to that. We need to act against this house soon, as I fear we are running out of time.

Looks round in the pub then starts to write something in their journal. They turn the book to Rose which reads:

The gas turns men into monsters. Next time we are at Cohen's I will show you the lab reports. It seemed to kill the body, all organs were blackened and dying, but the mind was preserved, from the reports it sounded like the intelligence was enhanced. I believed one of the subjects escaped, but we are unable to find them. Do not utter a word of this when we are in public.

It looks an interesting book. I will have to read it myself sometime.

She hands the pen over to Rose.

Continues to talk to Magnus about her latest work and theories in language as dry as possible, writing in the notebook she passes it over it reads

Monsters in what way?  If the body was dying how were they dangerous? What do you believe the purpose of the experiments were? Enhanced operatives perhaps?
: Re: The George Inn
: PaperWitch99 February 15, 2019, 05:41:47 PM
Magnus

I see.

Continues the conversation and writes again. After a while she pushes the book with the pen back to Rose.

I say monsters but there were no physical deformation on the outside of the body. They seemed to have increased strength and couldn't feel pain when they were shot or injured. The first one we came across had a broken jaw but wasn't phased by it. When me and Peter opened up one of the bodies we were both surprised with what we found.

I don't know for certain what the purposes of the experiments was but I believe they were also keeping the subjects alive for as long as possible, the control died within a few days due to exhaustion. I would have thought 'super soldiers' was the objective but I can't say for certain until we have more evidence.

Rose

"You see Magnus with this formula I believe it may be possible to create an even stronger tranquiliser"

Scrippling in the book for a few seconds she then passes it over she still talks about the formula whilst you read

I apologise for my ignorance but if you could go over what happened before I and Violet joined the group. What got you onto z gas? What happened fighting these monsters? What led you to black friers after? I feel like I only have a few parts of the puzzle you understand?

: Re: The George Inn
: PaperWitch99 February 15, 2019, 09:37:29 PM
Magnus

"Surely you must start with another base component. I cannot possibly see that working, however I have not had much training in alchemy. Are you still offering the training you proposed when we first met?"

She shakes her head and begins to write her response.

I feel like we need to discuss this when we can talk to each other. I will try to answer as much as I can but the information you want is on the papers held by Peter and Cohen.
Cohen was the one to put us onto the Lab as he had heard reports of terrible things happening. He tasked us with finding out what had happened. I do need to ask him more on this situation as I have a few concerns about how and why we got involved. Before we went into the building we gathered information about monsters and were told to shoot them on sight. Mouse was the one to dispatch them. Shot them right through the head. And black fires. It was mentioned in the letters we gathered from the Smeddlintons.

She passes back the book then stands up.

She smirks as she looks up at Rose. She then sighs.

Your past is your past. Like Peter I know some things, but only what the papers told us. I know I wouldn't like anyone prying into my past so I will not pry into yours. I know it would not change my opinion of you, as the past is in the past.

She giggles at her joke. Then the same unnerving smile creeps along her face.

Oh how smart of you Rose. Magnus always tells me how smart you are.

The pleasure is all mine. Now do tell me your tales Rose. I am very interested.
: Re: The George Inn
: Secretly a doom bot February 18, 2019, 11:11:28 AM
Rose

I only hope I can get to know you well Annabelle.

As to my story, to cut out the needless drivel and make it as simple possible,  when I was in my later years of school I found myself frustrated by the slow pace forced upon me by my teachers in regards to alchemy, it was a Catholic School, very very uptight and not always very big on the sciences. As a result there came a point where I was wishing for practical experience with a lab and it was being held back from me in favour of endless dreary lessons where we recited formula's they never intended us to use. This changed for me when I took an offer from one Edward Heath, him and his friends wanted some illegal pharmaceuticals and my reputation as an exceptionally smart troublemaker led him to believe I could help, I was given access to one of his fathers labs and materials, it's funny thinking back, I didn't even take any payment that first time. I was just excited to get to do something practical with alchemy.

She takes a sip of her drink

And so it was a good middle class girl like me with aspirations of higher education became a drug dealer in secondary school to a bunch of upper class louts. It was going well and I was making lots of money until a day just a few months before graduation when I was caught, Edward and his friends were let off with a caning but I was expelled in disgrace. The arguments in my family home were atrocious I tell you. Mother was very disappointed, I couldn't take the judgement and attitude, and so with the money I'd saved from doing Edwards's jobs I bought a flat in the east end and an alchemy set of my own, Violet was the only member of my family to stand by me and so came with. We continued our business just like in school, same clientele and growing every day. Wasn't the life I envisioned but it wasn't bad either. I had my lab had my work. I was so young back then, it's funny to think...

A few more seconds of silence, Rose is fidgeting

A few years later one Lord Ashford came to me wanting a more specialist product he believed I could provide, he despised his wife and a divorce would prove too costly so he needed something to take care of the problem that was painless and untraceable, it was more important to him that it was untraceable of course.

Laughs bitterly

I was horrified but I said I'd think about it, and then over that night I steadily convinced myself, that it was no different to selling a gun, that we needed the money, that if I didn't someone else would...

Once again she can't meet your eyes, she takes a huge drink emptying her glass, she goes up to the bar and buys the next round it's a double for her this time, setting it down she continues

All excuses really, but not entirely wrong. The system of power of the nobility have needs enablers like I was, it needs people to blame. You're smart enough to see where this is going, after a few years one of my customers was caught. He blamed me, there was a sting operation carried out by the police, I went to what I thought was a simple deal on my own due to Violet being... indisposed. I was caught, my contingency plan of blackmail fell apart. The papers smeared my name, I was blamed for twenty six murders, one of the worst serial killers of any age. The trial was a joke, I had the book thrown at me and was sentenced to life in Belmarsh.

Prison was difficult, I had unspeakable things happen to me, I was forced to actions I never before would have taken, I entered prison convicted for the murder of twenty six people despite having killed no one, I left prison having finally killed people with my own hands, that fact leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

She downs her drink again

So now you know my story, I'm not innocent no, but I did not deserve what happened to me. And that name, that mocking name. It angers me, I hope you can understand why Mouse... is no longer among us.

She sighs

Any questions?"

Smirks.

An interesting story Rose. It seems you-

They slam their fist down on the table and clutch their head. They look up will a sympathetic look.

Magnus

Reaches across the table for Rose's hand to comfort her.

I'm so sorry you were put through that awful experience Rose. That Edward you spoke of was manipulating and spiteful.

Looks to one side and breathes in deeply. She looks back at Rose.

Do not for one second, allow your past to control you. It was sad what happened to Mouse and I will mourn him, but I have thought for two weeks and I could not see him coming out of this alive. He conflicted too much with the rest of the group. Do not feel bad for what has been done.

The past is the past, Rose. We need to focus on the present and the future.

Leans back and wipes away the tear that had formed in her eyes. She laughs.

That's one difference between me and Annabelle. She never cries but I can't seem to help myself. We've both had out falls from grace.

She sighs.

I'm glad you trust me Rose. What do you think our plan of attack should be? With this revolution of course.

Rose

Starting to slightly slur her words

"Well I feel the French revolution may give us a good framework, kill all the nobles and let god sort them out"

She laughs

**A Slight eruption of cheering and cursing comes from the table of dominoes players, and Magnus will easily recognise Titch standing up and declaiming that everyone around the table is a cheating whore offspring and deserves to be publically gutted. With a smile on his face, as he slaps a couple of them on the back. While making his way to the bar, he spots the two of you, and friendly as always, nods and makes the universal gesture that he would like to buy you each a drink**

Nodding back

"Same again if that's acceptable Titch, one gin and one tea"

Titch

Orders the drinks, bringing the gin and his own small beer over first, then heads back to bring the tea separately.

You two are both pretty bloody smart, the same guy drawing double sixes, and dropping them the opposite end of another six, three games in a sodding row - the final six words almost shouted, loud enough for his old table to hear - is so unlikely as to be cheating, right?

Smiling

"Well I'm not much of a lover of games Titch but my rudimentary understanding would be that it is statistically unlikely but not impossible. Did you loose enough for it to be worth causing a fuss?"

Only the kind you get amongst friends, and cheating bastards! Again, the last bit shouted.

Been a while since your lot's been around. Thought you'd like to know that Deep is up around again, albeit a damned sight slower than usual.

I was going to come to see Deep actually but I didn't want to force myself in with not being in for above two weeks. I'm glad he is well. I was worried he wouldn't make it with all the blood he lost.

How are you? Its been far too long since we spoke.

Titch

Not too bad, if I'm honest.

After the hard words, and what happened after, I think everyone is sitting back and waiting to see what happens. Sorry to hear about Mouse by the way. He was an ugly little shit, and knew how to cause problems, but suffice to say, I owed him one for what he did.

The smile vanishes from their face at the mention of Mouse.

It was sudden. I did not expect him to die so soon. But we have to be strong.

She gives Titch a weak smile.

So has anything happened in these two weeks? Today is sadly the first day I am back in this little corner of London after our little break.

Thinks silently for a few moments

To be fair, it's been business as usual. Not like everyone's been on edge waiting for something to happen, but they're definitely waiting. Even when we found out about Mouse, it didn't clear the air that one gang or another might be planning to make a move.

How about you two? Off reclaiming the means of production?

She looks down at her tea and swirls it. She then looks back up at Titch.

Why don't you join us, Titch? Then you can see what we get up to. Maybe have some input yourself?

Jesus doc, after the potentially massive shift that Mouse might have caused if it weren't for you grabbing the fighting stick... and even then.

Nah, I'm staying with my tribe, I'll carry their water, take their salt, all that shit. I'm a criminal. A killer, and my high ideals run out when the iron's drawn.

I didn't mean join the cause! I meant see what we do for a day. But that's fine. I understand you may have tensions. Forgive me, I don't really understand gangs.

Looks at Rose, then looks back down at her tea.

It is a lazy Friday afternoon, Rose sits alone at a table in the corner of the pub drinking her tea quietly whilst reading The Credo of Christendom and other Addresses and Essays on Esoteric Christianity by Anna Kingsford
