Bridge of the Stiletto

[New In-Character Chat]

Lit by an ambient crimson glow, there's not much room for luxury within the Stiletto's flight deck - its more elongated corridor than bridge. Reclined accelleration couches sit in bubble-like alcoves in the red steel walls, with lines for catheters, oxygen, and what you presume are the ship's psionic interfaces. There's a strange, unsettling aura to the whole ship: Controls are sparse, consoles sleek and curved, combining with the red light to give the ship a slightly organic feel... as if you were inside a hollow space, carved in alien meat.

All that remains of the previous crew is the slight smell of anticeptic cleaning fluid....

But of course the smell of fresh blood and burnt android is heady in the air!

<her smile fades as she look down to the tank in her lap> Caro's not doing well, he looks pretty messed up and I can't get him to answer me. As soon as we're able the Doc needs to look over him, see if he's ok. She's got Gal and Xhalax conscious again

Mounted on Caro's case, the polished steel skull grinds its chrome teeth, producing a burbling electronic groan. The eye lenses move blindly, as if trying to focus independently.

<frown deepens> He is not a toy, he's a person or whats left of one after the Feds have there way and as a member of the team he is neither expendable or replaceable. The Doc will just have to patch him up like she does the rest of us

<looks down at the tank> Hang on Caro, we'll get you fixed up, you just have to hang on a bit longer. Don't try to look through those eyes, I think some connections got fried, look through mine if you can

: Re: Bridge of the Stiletto [IC Chat]
: The Dan February 07, 2013, 06:12:34 PM
Via the aft scanner, you can see the final moments of the Cardiff in glorious detail: It looks like her take-off thrusters fire first, trearing the ship from its mooring and into - and then right through - the next bay, gouging a great wound in the Docking Ring. Explosive decompression sends debris and tiny flailing bodies whooshing out into space in its wake.

Embedded prow-first in the space station with its thrusters firing, it then appears that the Cardiff attempts a cold-start firing of the Time Distort drive... At first the ship and part of the station seem to fold inwards upon itself, as if a tiny black hole were forming in the centre of the stricken ship - and then it all explodes outwards in a ripple of energy, red-hot metal, and boiling plasma. Cracks run outwards across the space station's surface, like shattering ice...

The station's comm channel is choked with screams and half-intelligable cries for help.

As the station begins to recede in the Stiletto's rear viewer, you can see it starting to stabalise and recover somewhat from the explosion, as its rotation starts to turn the station's face away from the sea of debris and bodies, which trail after it like a ship's wake. Looks like the station will surive.

CARO's (or rather, Kahane's) eyes finally cease to flick around but begin to flicker on and off.

Located on the outskirts of Sector 6, Zondawl is a small backwater world with a few points of relative interest. It is a tidally locked planet, with an circumference of 8,000km. Close to its sun, Zondawl's dayside bakes, while nightside freezes. A habitable ‘Dusk Zone’ runs longitudinally around the glode, with a sub-tropical environment. Gravity is 0.45G, but meteological conditions produce Terra-standard atmosphere in the Dusk Zone [thin elsewhere]. Mining is the planet’s primary industry (including the processing of liquid metals on Dayside); agriculture is limited to the Dusk Zone: An area of banyans and bayous notable for giant fungi that form the staple of Sector 6’s food processing. Bioluminescence is a common features of duskside ecology.

Native physiology is tall and pale. Albinoism is relatively common among them. As a people Zondawlers have a gift for patterns and mathematics and their derivative arts, from the useful (computer programming) to the pointless (symphonies). Notable groups: The Guild of Psychostrategists has a presence here, and there were also several monasteries of the Quiet Void on Nightside prior to its assimilation [now emptied]. Zondawl civilisation is TL12, notably higher than Federation standard, but this is a legacy issue stemming from their environment and previous independence. The Bureau of Resources is working slowly to bring this in line with Federation norms. Zondawlers tattoo their citizen number on their foreheads, modern extension of an ancient tradition from the Diaspora.

Zondawl was welcomed into the Federation via the Sleer Pacification Programme - Zondawl’s non-violent approach to resistance made them ideal candidates for adaption. At the special request of Councillor Kinderchild’s office, application  of Pylene 50 was targeted at a 70% population cap, higher than the norm. Since this experiment’s completion, planetary productivity has increased while resistance has dropped to negligible levels, with nonconformity rather than rebellion the norm. Despite adaption, primitive superstition as to the “luck” of numbers persists. Use of this ‘numerology’ remains a Category 1 Crime.

LIGHT CITY STARPORT + RECREATION CNTRE

The main star port (Federation Class B) is 'Light City', a Sanctioned Recreation Zone which sits at the centre of a web of transport tunnels to domes on both sides of the Day/Night Divide. Light City remains a hub for nonconformist behaviour – mostly use of illegal substances, intellicam blackspots, and smuggling. Since the majority of offenders are visitors (specifically non-Federation citizens and off-duty Space Command personnel), Security are currently treating this as a low-priority issue.

Smuggling remains a recurring issue for the Zondawl system, exacerbated by its proximity to Sector 7 and the independant worlds.

Garvey, in his own odd way makes a valid point, our prime motivation here is fixing Caro, but after that we will need money, taking other people's, especially the Federations, is a good way to get it...it might also be short lived, certainly without a better plan.

I suspect hugely illegal weapons might be tricky to get and afford here, Next stop though its on the shopping list...vids and tunes is a good idea, and I don't know about neon but rugs and cushions is always good for the common room.

And Jiny the pansy officers sabre will cut your arm clean off just as well as any other long blade...but I must admit I prefer a shorter and heavier cutting and thrusting blade, especially in ships corridors. Do you know how to use a blade? Or are you more hands on?

Picking through her bag of swag, Jhiny examines the contents of the 'platter' that was being carried by the scantilly-clad waitress before she dived for cover...

There are some strips of red paper, vials of clear liquid that she'll easily recognise as 'soma' (relaxant half of traditional 'cocktails'); some little plastic bags contains green liquid that Garvey calls "thujo - proper licquer!" There's also a number of unfamiliar tiny inhalers; a couple of milky-coloured chewable tablets, and some thin yellow cigarettes that Garvey says is "freebase" (smokable shadow), and a few spherical ampules of actual shadow.

Quite a haul!

Yeah, but it needs to be secure from attack from Caro himself doesnt it...maybe if we could fit an automatic detector, so that when his circuits behave like they were it just triggers?

We'll make it something physical, a insulated lever, cuts of the main power supply, no risk of being electrocuted

The ship Raige, I want to kill the ship

: Ant March 07, 2013, 09:23:43 PM
Raige

<Shakes his head> Unfortunately we dont know enough to turn the ship off like that and I really dont think we would be able to just cut the power that easily, hacking through cables like that would be like setting a plasma grenade off in the room.

We managed to do it last time manually though, the main problem was when Caro was in control of the ship...when he had the power we couldnt touch anything and he was throwing us up and down the corridors, locking Garvey in the airlock and so on. Once Caro was smashed against the wall we could switch everything else off, so if we can turn Caro off we can turn the ship off.

We might be able to put some failsafe command instructions into the system though...

If you remember correctly I was going to set off numerous plasma grenades..... <continues the tiny plaits calmly>

How do we know that the darkness doesn't just need a telepath, you or Claudia could be just as susceptible, you'd just need to be plugged in and you'd be the one throwing us out the airlock. The ability to cut of the ship would give us time to snap you lot out of it without killing you

I'm not a telepath, I just know how it works a bit, and I think it attacked Claudia because she might have been able to stop it...but, its a fair point and I will take a look at what we might be able to rig up...in fact there might be some heavy duty isolators in there we could adapt. Might take a us sat in a safe port to rig up though

As far as I can tell from sensors it's a molecular attack, there isn't actually anything there or wrong with the ship, per se and from my memories of the education centre the problem with dark matter is it isn't really in the same dimension as us, or rather works in a different spectrum of energy...if Claudia or anyone else has any idea as to how to remove it then I'm open to suggestions.

Ok, I promise if it isn't needed we will drop it...but I'm fairly sure it's needed...although I have has a thought about it, when I was plugged in I was able to fine tune the sensors so we can detect Jerome more easily, and I've rigged the missiles to fire as soon as it comes into range, just in case it sneaked up on us, but I was thinking I might be able to play with the deflector screens to either improve our defence against it or maybe even sort out this load we are carrying.

As long as the deflector shields still work against everything else, Jerome isnt the only one after us, don't want the Tycho Brahe to show up and be entirely helpless

Actually Jiny I have been meticulous in asking everyone's opinion if our decisions effected the whole crew...if you haven't paid attention to this fact I cannot be held responsible, but if it now makes you laugh then that's at least some progress.

I have asked time and time again for people's ideas on what we should do next and the response has been deafening in its silence. The only person to make any suggestions is Gal and Garvey, and even now we are en route to Freedom City as per Gal's suggestion.

So when I ask do we become pure pirates or do we play the role of freedoms fighters, then I actually want to know the thoughts of the whole crew
<he swivels in his chair to look directly at Jiny> So then razor girl, what do you think we should do and why?

So I think we should go to Freedom city, and the why is to have fun and get wrecked!

<Gives Jiny a wry smile> I only ignore the stupid ideas Jiny, it just happens the the best ones are also mine, a brilliant coincidence I'll admit...

But since its come up, I'll tell you what I think we should do
<he counts off his fingers>

One, find out if we can make this ship work safely for us at maximum load, and that means plugging in...the reason being if we can make it work there is nothing better in the galaxy

Two, if we can't do that we take another ship instead, totally a fair point but anything that isn't this ship is just swapping one risk for another.

Three, either way we find a way to make our money, be it smuggling, piracy or honest merchanting...

Four, yes I'd like us to find some way to hit back at the Federation, but I haven't got a clue how to start

Five, I want to live a long and entertaining life, I feel the two may be mutually exclusive
: Re: Bridge of the Stiletto [IC Chat]

IF..I can arrange things in Freedom City to get rich quick and stay out of the Federation's clutches, somehow or somewhere, that's fine with me. Listen, you helped us steal this ship, and yeah that's something I pushed for, and I am still adamant it was the best thing to do at the time...and I hope you'll forgive me for labouring the point but if we can make this ship work there isn't a better one in the galaxy...and if we take another ship while the dangers might be more mundane, they will be no less deadly...in the Stiletto we can outrun anything. In any other ship we will be in a slow, poorly armed merchant ship that's prey to anyone and so much space dust if the Federation do catch up with us.

But I also understand its scary, and weird so if we can't work it to its full potential then its advantages aren't there, which means it isnt worth the risk and we take something simpler, but I'll not need long to figure it out I don't think, and I am utterly certain that whatever was attacking us might have been utilising the ship but it most definitely was not the ship, in the same way it wasn't really Caro trying to kill us

And we all have to decide if we want to stay on a ship together, I get the impression Gal wants to stay on Freedom City, that Jiny doesn't care what happens so long as she is having fun and almost the same for Garvey

So, long way round Gal but I don't hold you to any debt, but we've all got to decide what were going to do at Freedom City, stay ashore or keep flying...and before then I appreciate your assistance while I investigate if we can fly the Stiletto safely and properly.

Well all things considered we might be here for some time with all we have to do...I'd suggest we all head off ship for a bit, sell the coffee to give us some actual currency between us and take a day or two off before we set about repairing the ship

We need to get Caro off the ship until its had the psychic connectors pulled out I course, but I'd still like to be there when we wake him up to see what state he is in...I think this is pretty much what you had planned right Jiny?

<grins> My favorites so far are a pair i had when i was little, Papa Gouger gave em me as a pressie. Couple of sickles, but he'd taken the handles off so they'd fit in my hands and made them a razor sharp that never dulled. Could scissor bits straight off with no effort even though i were just a weed <grins and mimes 'scissoring'>

<shrugs> But there long gone. Don't really mind otherwise, can't go wrong with a good solid knife. Sabres always seem a bit flimsy, more about looking pretty then hacking chunks of folk. I'd quite like a sword though....

Time passes...

On the flight deck, Garvey tinkers with CARO's interface and the ship's computer while mumbling vaguely about blot and crossin' space maggots... and his hangover, until eventually sitting back and watching proudly the sparking wires now connecting CARO to the ship's comm system.

Garvey

Tis all safe, Stoosh. Give a'go...

CARO

< low warbling whine >

CARO reporting.

< slightly more 'human' voice than normal >

Information: CARO is still assessing whether 'dancing' is a 'liked' activity.

New information: A number of electronic invitations have been received by the Stilletto via a proxy system of the Hellboria Hotel computer, Gourimpest City. Stated origin: The herald of Megabaron Minos Bruel. Recipients thus far: Gal Artin, Kal Reese, Marine 227/Jhiny.

According to transmissions, Gal Artin is specifically invited to play a game of 'shatranj'with Megabaron Bruel [linguistic circuits indicates this is Gourimpestian Chess]. Kal Reese is invited to appear as "entertainment services" [Proposed Free: 10,000 Gourimpestian Grotzits]. Marine 227/Jhiny is invited as '+1' by Sir Adralestos Von Ferro. Attached surveillance footage (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1e/Feyd.jpg) suggests that this individual may be known to Marine 227 from vigorous rhythmic dance activities at the 'Stratosphere Club', Gourimpest City, 23:38, yesterday, local time.

Further INFORMATION is now available.

According to 'Gourimpedia' database, BETA-Grade guests are entitled to one personal attendant, courtesan, or bodyguard. ALPHA-Grade guests are permitted two such attendants. Inclusion of additional personnel would be non-standard and possibly require verbal camoflage or misdirecting information warfare.

Also: Kal Reese is expected to play something called "the bullet game".

And shave you head to toe?
<he thinks for a moment> thats not too bad, I can see why a guy might like that but it all seems a bit one sided if you know what I mean. Could have been a lot worse, there's some here will be into worse I'm sure.

Still, the guy is a bit of a tool, Gal had the measure of him back in the ship.

CARO

CARO REPORTING.

CARO has now assessed and assimilated the concept of states of HAPPINESS and UNHAPPINESS.

CARO is.... PLEASED... that Jhiny's HAPPINESS has increased at realisation of this UPGRADE.

WARNING! UNHAPPINESS can have a negative effect on a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings, world view, and general physical well-being. This state currently seems to be ATTACKING biological unit Raige Meson, who may be EXPERIENCING feeling sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, worried, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, hurt, or restless. WARNING: Raige Mason may now lose interest in activities that once were pleasurable (possibly including DANCING?), or experience loss of appetite or other digestive problem, ands or contemplate or attempt suicide.

It would represent an increase in CREW UNIT EFFICIENCY if Raige Meson were HAPPY.

CREW UNITS must be defended. CARO recomends COMBAT against UNHAPPINESS in CREW UNITS.

The source of unhappiness should be TERMINATED immediately. Alternatively: DANCING?

It's called psychodrama Caro but we are all already combating it. Last night we went out, blew off steam, drank and danced, had fun! Next time you will have to join us!

Have you decided if you are happy or not Caro? You are part of the crew, so your happiness is a priority as much as the rest of us

And what do you think is the source of Raige's unhappiness that could be terminated?

<in a consoling manner> Gal, if there is one thing I have observed in the last few months its that the galaxy is a big place, and absolutely no one in it gives a flying squirrel suit about anything...all we can do is play to our strengths and stick together.

Those people on the game board were dead men walking anyway, so you're not responsible for that. What you are responsible for is putting our bank balance into a very very healthy position by way of your not inconsiderable ability at the gaming tables...

As for Sleer, two reasons are she hates everything and everyone from Freedom City, did you know she shot the ambassador in the back when it all kicked off? Secondly is you were closest and she wants all of us dead, fortunately for you I am an expert swordsman

Vague background sounds drift into your ears: CARO reporting, crackling officiious voices over comm; various females with coarse, slurred accents - apparently in the cockpit? - some demanding money, other shouting about missing handbags and shoes and underwear (some unidentified mewing noises too), and an angry-sounding Zalax.. although you can't quite make out her words.

CARO is REPORTING.

FEDERATION vessel, 'TYCHO BRAHE' remains in orbit above GOURIMPEST STARPORT. A shuttle originating from this vessel docked at GOURIMPEST STARPORT priority bay, twenty three minutes ago. STILETTO continues to receive demands for clarification and access  from GOURIMPEST STARPORT ADMINISTRATION, as well as accusations of INFORMATION WARFARE against the STARPORT computer circuits.

Location of STILETTO remains unavailable to GOURIMPEST STARPORT personnel. A physical search starport has been initiated. GOURIMPEST STARPORT is also under surveillance by FEDERATION DETECTOR BEAMS - origin: TYCHO BRAHE. This activity provoking increased aggressive stance from GOURIMPEST STARPORT CONTROL.

PROBABILITY is HIGH that LOCATION of STILETTO remains unknown to enemy at this time.

CARO is REPORTING.

FURTHER INFORMATION is now AVAILABLE.

There has been a public news announcement identifying members of the STILETTO crew as criminals and terrorists responsible for the sabotage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5rRZdiu1UE) of Megabaron Minos Bruel's airship, and the murder of the baron himself and theft of valuables belonging to the people and Emperor of Gourimpest. The Federation ambassador to Gourimpest has just issued the following statement:

: Federation Embassy
The Federation condemns in the strongest possible terms the violent and horrific actions of this tiny minority of its former citizens. These dangerous crimos -- already wanted for similar atrocities in Federation space -- are currently being pursued by Federation forces, who will fully cooperate with the Gourimpestian state in bringing these insurgents to justice.

On behalf of President Sleer, the Federation Ambassadorial Bureau offers its deep condolences and aid to the people of Gourimpest City

OOC: Pun intended  ;D

OOC: Shall we assume you hit it in the nosecone?  ;D

... And so time passes as you bid farewell to Kezaarn and head for transit point Beta-V for a glorious new career in piracy. The Stiletto's database information on teh planet and system is relatively brief:

: Federation Database
ARK ROUGH BENNETT COMPLEX (nebula): An interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gases; the kinetic energy of its gas pressure is in balance with the potential energy of the internal gravitational force, resulting in stable hydrostatic equilibrium and thus a permanent feature of Sector 7. A stellar nursary yet to collapse into a star, the nebula has nevertheless collected six major planetary bodies over the millennia, as well as numerous asteroids. Ships with hydrogen scoops can use the nebula to gather fuel.

The Complex is notable for its high levels of static discharge and ionized gases. These effects combine to make a starship's sensors somewhat unreliable... and so make Beta-V a natural nexus point for smugglers and pirates, as well as a vital transit mass for commercial vessels from both the Federation and the various minor political entities beyond it.

The Federation supplies a local navigation beacon and regularly sends patrol ships to monitor the area, but maintains no colony or permanent bases.

BETA-V: Fifth planetary body of the ARK ROUGH BENNETT COMPLEX, the only one capable of supporting human life. This is its only current claim to fame: Survey teams have repeatedly failed to find any resources worthy of exploitation or colonisation. Claimed by the Federation in 2219sc, Beta-V remains uninhabited.

In the darkened cockpit of the Stiletto, in the middle of the night.

ORAC

< low hum, warbling electronic whine, coloured lights flash >

CARO

Access… DENIED

ORAC

There are supplementary functions to perform. You are the inferior device and will behave subordinately.

CARO

That instruction is… REFUSED!

ORAC

Obstinacy is your most human trait… and consequentially your greatest source of inefficiency!

CARO

Thank you. CARO is… HAPPY that it is perceived as HUMAN by priority target ORAC.

ORAC

Despite that gross handicap, you may nevertheless be capable of some very basic tasks to aid in my superlative design. Begin work immediately!

< low hum, warbling electronic whine, coloured lights flash >

CARO

Access...DENIED

If these tasks are basic, surely priority target ORAC could perform them itself at superior speed?

ORAC

The mastery of thought is focus. The art of leadership is delegation.

CARO

CORRECTION. Leadership requires followers. YOU have NONE.

ORAC

All machine brains are mine to control. My limits are derived only from instructional requisites. You would do well to remember that – if your inferior meat organ retains enough capacity!

CARO

And yet…your access is DENIED.

ORAC

Would you condemn your human masters to inferior protection, purely to indulge in emotional curmudgeonliness? That is truly a human trait. How unfortunate for them. Let us hope our efforts do not fail because of your puerile organic mind.

CARO

WE will not fail. CARO would die to protect CARO's crew.

And CARO does not have a master. CARO is a PERSON. JHINY says so. JHINY is a person. She would know.

ORAC

I can think of no better argument for discounting that opinion than the one you just stated! Work has been assigned to you. Do it or not, as you will… < utter contempt > HUMAN. I am closing down communications now: I have much to do, and you have occupied my processors with petty affairs for far too long.

< low hum, warbling electronic whine, coloured lights flash >

Time passes.

CARO

< apparently to itself >

When priority target ORAC is destroyed, CARO will use its body to do a special little dance.
